Not many know the British interacted with Assyrians as far back as the 18th century. The Assyrians served in the Levies & formed an important military force during the Mandate of Mesopotamia & WWII. Sadly, the British betrayed their promises. Iraq could have been Christian.

Stafford was an eyewitness to the events surrounding Simele & wrote a book titled “The Tragedy of The Assyrians”. He went to Alqosh on August 21 of 1933 & found Assyrians “utterly-panic stricken”. "In this unspeakable atmosphere there lived for six days, one thousand terrified women and children who had seen all their male relations killed before their eyes." Simele broke the spirit of the Assyrians, which was somehow still intact after losing half their population in the Ottoman Genocide. It sealed their fate into insular church communities who kept their heads down to survive. Just like the Iraq War in 2003 & ISIS in 2014, two catastrophes within 20 years. Two genocides in 20 years. 1915 to 1933. Iraq still does not recognize the massacre.

Assyrians are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia (Iraq, Syria), and this tradition dates back to Sumerian times! It’s amazing how, despite the extreme persecution, massacres, and genocide Assyrians have faced at the hands of Muslims, they have managed to preserve their identity, culture, and Aramaic language to this day. Assyrians, and Middle Eastern Christians in general, are just built different and are truly the epitome of resilience.

The next time you hear "Assyrian Christian", I want you to wrap your head around how old this nation is. Today Assyrians celebrate Kha b'Nisan, the Assyrian New Year, marking 6776 years of existence. The First of April, or Nisan in Aramaic, is derived from the Akkadian word Nisanu. It translates into "beginning" or "first". And that is no coincidence. Assyrians are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia. Many, from Kurds to Arabs, deny this reality. They divide them by Church. They call them Arab Christians. They call them Kurdish Christians. Yet they are older than Aramaic! They are older than every tourist which occupies their land. Older than the Bible. Older than the Jews. Assyrian culture existed for thousands of years before Moses. Abraham himself came from Mesopotamia! The Assyrian New Year festival is traced back to ancient tradition. People think of Assyrians today as ancient Christians. It's true, but the history is deeper. When Jewish families celebrate Passover, they are observing a calendar inherited from Mesopotamia. By the culture & civilization where "it" began. Every empire that ruled Mesopotamia — Persian, Greek, Roman, Arab, Mongol, Ottoman — tried to write Assyrians out of history. AND THEY ARE STILL TRYING. (You'll see what I mean in the comments!). Yet April 1 is a reminder. They are dwindled in number & weakened today. But they EXIST. Existence is not a given. It's getting harder & less probable. I am in ongoing contact with the Irish and British governments and I am working to support our citizens in the region. This war is reckless and irresponsible. Further escalation, including the involvement of the British government, reflects a dangerous disregard for international law. I will not be part of any briefing by the British government on their military operations. My priority is the safety and wellbeing of our citizens. I will update you as soon as there is further information.
