I remember being stuck during the El Niño rains as a child in school and being marooned for hours until very late at night in 1997. Leadership is to provide solutions; it is not about blaming. The same people who cry foul when we evict those on the riparian are the same ones making noise. We hired 4500 green army who are out there unclogging every single day, but who dumps in those drains? Who is littering in those drains? We have provided bins. There is a responsibility all of us must bear. We must be the generation that sorts out the problem, not remembers the problem and leaves it for somebody else #CitizenSundayLive

Over the past week I’ve seen several patients with Medicare or TRICARE who were told they were not candidates for breast reconstruction using their own tissue. But that wasn’t the real story. The reality is that reimbursement from Medicare and TRICARE for these procedures is very low, and some surgeons simply cannot afford to perform them. That is a real system problem that needs to be addressed. But telling a patient they are not a candidate when they actually are is not the answer. Patients trust what their doctors tell them. When we say someone isn’t a candidate for a procedure, many people never seek another opinion. So if you are a patient with Medicare or TRICARE and you are being told you are not a candidate for DIEP flap breast reconstruction, ask a very direct question: “Is reimbursement affecting this recommendation?” Patients deserve honesty and transparency when it comes to their care. And we also need to have an honest conversation about fixing the reimbursement system so that surgeons can provide these procedures without being financially penalized for doing the right thing.

I have been seeing many photos of people handing out relief packages, and while this was necessary in the early days, I am concerned about how it affects the dignity of our people. I do not want Jamaica to be portrayed as a place where citizens are scrambling for food or fighting over packages. That is not who we are. We are an independent, proud people, even in times of hardship. If we are giving support, we must do it respectfully and quietly, protecting the dignity of those in distress. And those receiving help must also remember their dignity. This is why I announced that we will be transitioning away from handing out food packages. The system has become too politicized, who got, who didn’t get, and who was invited to distribute. That is not acceptable, and it is not the Jamaica we want to build. So we will move to a voucher or coupon system that allows people to purchase what they need directly, without stigma, without politics, and with their dignity intact.
