contrarian though: the reason he was so depressed was actually because of all the moving. One human is not capable of seeing that much beauty in that many different places and being okay with settling in a random city in America.

Sounds like good advice, and is for some people that are stuck. But for Bourdain, it's clear that the constant need to move, and "outrun" the lazy slacker he said he had in him, was simply him running away from much deeper issues that he never dealt with, and which ended up killing him

Considering this guy killed himself perhaps better advise would be to actually put down roots somewhere, marry a great girl, have kids and take on responsibilities outside of your own selfish moment to moment whims. He didn’t do any of those things, and he paid the price.

First off. Judging purely off what we saw on tv, GREAT GUY! But. . . I can't think of anyone more traveled than him and maybe putting down roots, being in close proximity with friends and family, a support system is the right thing to do. BY ALL MEANS, travel, but have a home.

I love Anthony. More than any other “celebrity”. But I can’t believe that would be good. One thing I resonated with early on in my fandom was the depression I feel when traveling, seeing how others live. It’s beautiful, but it hurts. And I think it must’ve hurt him too.

That’s why he ended up depressed. Too much constant moving, no stability or meaningful grounded connection. The most depressed people I know travel constantly.

In the end, he didn’t have any real friends He was a heroin addict in recovery He got a job that encouraged him to get drunk nearly every night. A recovering heroin addict can’t live like that And he didn’t have any friends that could tell him, you’re in danger Walk away 🙏

Viktor Frankl had the best framework for finding meaning: 1) Creative values: what you give to the world. 2) Experiential values: what you receive through love, beauty, and connection. 3) Attitudinal values: how you respond to suffering that cannot be avoided.

Sounds like horrible advice, I can eat the cuisine of the entire world just within my city and I still get to build real relationships in my neighborhood and be around family for dinners and activities. Why would you wanna be Mr nobody in Thailand taking a tuk tuk to dinner by yourself
