Why would you take his advice if he killed himself? It clearly didn’t help him.

Big maybe here but; maybe constantly moving was the issue cuz you lose a sense of where home actually is then you lose yourself and life becomes meaningless

contrarian though: the reason he was so depressed was actually because of all the moving. One human is not capable of seeing that much beauty in that many different places and being okay with settling in a random city in America.

This suicide devastated me, Anthony was one of my favorite Food Network Chefs, a prime example of you never know what someone else is suffering with🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Sounds like good advice, and is for some people that are stuck. But for Bourdain, it's clear that the constant need to move, and "outrun" the lazy slacker he said he had in him, was simply him running away from much deeper issues that he never dealt with, and which ended up killing him

Considering this guy killed himself perhaps better advise would be to actually put down roots somewhere, marry a great girl, have kids and take on responsibilities outside of your own selfish moment to moment whims. He didn’t do any of those things, and he paid the price.

First off. Judging purely off what we saw on tv, GREAT GUY! But. . . I can't think of anyone more traveled than him and maybe putting down roots, being in close proximity with friends and family, a support system is the right thing to do. BY ALL MEANS, travel, but have a home.

I love Anthony. More than any other “celebrity”. But I can’t believe that would be good. One thing I resonated with early on in my fandom was the depression I feel when traveling, seeing how others live. It’s beautiful, but it hurts. And I think it must’ve hurt him too.

That’s why he ended up depressed. Too much constant moving, no stability or meaningful grounded connection. The most depressed people I know travel constantly.

In the end, he didn’t have any real friends He was a heroin addict in recovery He got a job that encouraged him to get drunk nearly every night. A recovering heroin addict can’t live like that And he didn’t have any friends that could tell him, you’re in danger Walk away 🙏

Maybe a better idea to face yourself than finding ways to escape. My advice, stay idle.

Viktor Frankl had the best framework for finding meaning: 1) Creative values: what you give to the world. 2) Experiential values: what you receive through love, beauty, and connection. 3) Attitudinal values: how you respond to suffering that cannot be avoided.

Sounds like horrible advice, I can eat the cuisine of the entire world just within my city and I still get to build real relationships in my neighborhood and be around family for dinners and activities. Why would you wanna be Mr nobody in Thailand taking a tuk tuk to dinner by yourself

its the opposite. If you cant find it within yourself, you wont find it by moving.

Move. Get divorced twice. Have a kid at 50. Be too busy to raise them. Send cries for help at 2 a.m. Become depressed. Become addicted. Become suicidal. Yeah I’m ok

I’m sorry but WHY tf would I take his advice? He clearly wasn’t happy and travel was clearly just masking whatever was making him unhappy. How about just stay put and build something where you are? Build a community around yourself that lasts. Idk

Crazy how i came to this conclusion almost verbatim little after covid. YOU MUST MOVE, if you are not moving you are dead. Not moving is the biggest form of self betrayal. Same with sleep.
