Nothing beats a chance encounter with a legend! While driving home to Utah after the rock climbing divisionals in Sacramento, this father-son duo crossed paths with a true monster of the rails: Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014. 🚂💨 Currently on its historic 2026 Coast-to-Coast Tour, this 1.1-million-pound beast... show more

🚨 For those upset that they didn’t blow the whistle: The train engineers followed federal regulations that strictly require the horn to be sounded in a specific pattern only at public crossings for safety. Railroad company operating rules prohibit unnecessary horn use, and they can only blow it freely in true emergencies. You can see they briefly flashed a light for him. 🔦

My great uncle helped build that at the ALCO plant in Schenectady, New York. Such a cool train!

He left an amazing legacy! That’s awesome! 👏 🚂

First time a train locomotive has brought tears to my eyes. 🇺🇸

Thank you, friend. I love how powerful it is.

Something about the Old Iron Horse that feels so wonderful to the heart seeing it!

It’s like therapy for my heart! It somehow calms my nervous system! 🤗 ♥️ 🚂

I love steam engines in general, being a Tool & Die Maker working the machine shop, just listening and feeling the steam locomotive pass by makes time seem to stop :) my daughters love the trains as well. Makes me happy

A sight to behold

@Realmursejd Holy Cow! An Articulated Steam Engine! Two sets of driving wheels, with a swivel between them for going around curves! When we'd witness a steam engine passing by, we'd put a bunch of copper pennies on the rails well beforehand! Afterwards, we'd collect a lot of OVAL pennies!

@Realmursejd That’s the best memory!

That beast is coming east, heading for Philly for the 250th Birthday celebration. Waiting for them to publish the route because it should pass close to us. It is definitely a bucket list item for me and I am not going to miss it. It looks like a "whistle stop" is planned at Horseshoe Curve in PA and I will head there if necessary, but suspect I'll have multiple opportunities based on the the suspected tracks that will be used. Can't wait.

He waited faithfully for that horn. No horn. Quite depressing.

Weighs in at a million pounds, if I recall correctly.

You are right! How magnificent!

It's enormous. I saw the Challenger (4-6-6-4) on display in Cheyenne, which is almost as big.

Blow the damn whistle or horn for the kid ffs

My Dad was once an Engineer for the UP and he once drove the Big Boy as it made its way from Muskogee, Ok to Denison, TX, many, many years ago.

Awesome. I biked all thru Utah from 1989 to 1997. Lived in Park City and Summit Park. Love and miss the mountains. My Grand dad on my Moms side was a Conductor in Pennsylvania then Maryland.

I love that it brings back good memories! 🤗 So powerful!

I live in Omaha - home of Union Pacific - and we have Big Boy 4043 on display near I-80 as you enter Nebraska. It's HUGE.

600 tons of American ingenuity.

Another one of our "secret" industrial weapons in WWII.

@deborah_loew I’ve seen it twice. Once in Evanston, Wyoming, and the second time at Fossil Butte National Monument. It’s a true marvel of its time. Glad y’all got to see it.

@grok is there a route schedule for this train, if not when is one to be published

wow!!!! how exciting!

All aboard!!! 😁 🚂

@billysandytodd No lie. This brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful beast ❤️

Wonder why they wouldn’t toot the horn for the kid

Seen it twice. Awesome experience.

Pretty Amazing!

Saw that in Michigan! It’s a giant & if you love trains, this is a must see! It’s at the Henry Ford museum.

If you’re working as an engineer on there, you seen some kid doing airhorn why the hell wouldn’t you do the airhorn man for every single kid?

@billysandytodd I have it on my pinned post from last year where it stopped in front of us.

Badass!

What a dick for not blowing the horn for the kid lol!

Thanks for sharing this. I took the kids to see it at the Sacramento Railroad Museum. Pretty awe inspiring. For casual observers, there is a website for its journey.

What a great video! WOW!

Stunning piece of engineering! Built in 1941 when there was no computer aided design. All done on paper and what a masterpiece! 😍

An adventure your son will likely remember for the rest of his life! 🚂

I remember Dad working for several years when I was young prior to 1964 as a brakeman for the B&O Railroad out of Cumberland, Maryland.

@bo14392427 Great video! The trains we have today do not have the clack clack chug jug sound

Miserable sods couldn't give him a toot on the steam whistle.

My husband got to be the conductor on Big Boy from Rawlins Wy to Rock Springs Wy. He said it was really cool to see how it all works. That train is so freaking enormous lol
