At 40 I’m more disciplined and dialed in than I’ve ever been. But the days still feel shorter than they used to. I’m carrying a book with my co-author Neal Flesher, building a business, running the content operation, and every one of those things has a version of “always something” attached to it. What I’ve been slowly forced to accept is that life moves faster than the systems I build to keep up with it, and no amount of structure changes that. Rick Rubin on why "less is more" is harder than it sounds: "If you're stacking a lot of things on top of each other, each one of those things becomes less important. So if you have 10 things, each one of them is one-tenth as important as one by itself." That's why reducing is harder than building. Rick explains: "If you're making something and you want the least amount involved, those things have to be really critically curated because they're doing the work of everything and nothing is hidden." Then he gives the example that makes the whole idea land... Guitars. "A lot of recordings are made where a guitarist plays and then they double it and triple it and they create this wall of guitars. And when there's a wall of guitars, you hear guitar, but you don't hear someone playing guitar. You just hear guitar. It becomes more generic." The alternative is the version most producers won't commit to: "When one person plays it and you can hear their fingers on the strings, it's got more personality, it's more human. And I tend to look for those things where the singular essence shows through." The lesson sits underneath almost everything Rick has made. Stacking is safer. Doubling and tripling hides the player, smooths the edges, and lets you avoid choosing. But it also strips out the thing that makes the work feel like it came from a specific human being. I was in France, on my way to meet with politicians - and I walked in not fully understanding their political system, but I understood language, and that's mostly what they wanted. How did Robert Kennedy Jr. get as far as he did? How do you make this an issue that helps a political career instead of hurting it? I'd spent a long time as his Director of Communications working through exactly those questions, so we'll see how much of it translated. What I'd taken away from the screening the night before was still with me. France's vaccine uptake was around 85%. Poland's was 50%. The people in that room said there was no way out of the program for their kids - every child already vaccinated, and they were trying to figure out how to fight from that position. It's a different fight than what Americans have been having. We've been resisting something being forced on us. They've been living under it for years already. I kept asking myself whether that wears a movement down or makes it harder. I'm still not sure.

Scarlett Johansson says four and a half seconds of Russian was harder than Black Widow’s stunt Scarlett Johansson: I’m trying to remember what the rehearsal process was for this scene. A lot of this fight I couldn’t perform because I’m tied to a chair, and it’s actually really burdensome. Heidi Moneymaker, who is my stunt double for all of the Avengers films, is an incredible athlete, amazing performer. We’ve worked together since Iron Man 2. For a decade, together, we created Black Widow, her style, her gait, and all of the flourishes that come with her fight style. The stunt team would do this amazing previs, and then we’d work out what pieces I’d be capable of doing and what pieces the stunt performer would do. It kind of becomes like a marriage of those two things. I do remember how challenging it was to learn the four and a half seconds of Russian. That, to me, was probably more difficult than the stunt, if that makes any sense. It was a mental stunt. I was way more stressed about the Russian than the chair.
