He was in despair after a "tempestuous argument" with her. The shooting was brought to a halt & Serge Silberman, the producer had decided to abandon the movie altogether. The considerable financial loss it ensued was depressing to both Buñuel and Silberman. One day, both of them were drowning their sorrows in a bar. After 2 dry martinis, Buñuel suddenly got the idea to cast two actresses for the same role. An idea which had never been done before. He told it to Silberman as a joke but he loved it & they proceeded to make the movie with Carole Bouquet & Ángela Molina as Conchita, the lead character.
