He deserves all of that and more. But the “I’m one of the good Jews” defense becomes meaningless once you’ve helped make antisemitism socially acceptable. That is the thing about setting racism on fire: you don’t get to decide where the flames spread or whom they burn. You cannot spend years excusing it, sanitizing it and giving it a politically acceptable target, then act surprised when the people you empowered stop distinguishing between the Jews you told them were acceptable to hate and the Jews you thought were safely on your side. Hatred does not respect the little ideological boundaries its enablers draw for it. Once you make racism acceptable, you don’t control the wildfire. You just supplied the fucking gasoline.
