They featured a built-in solar noon aperture, where a beam of sunlight passed through an opening and illuminated the center stone, a solstice and equinox alignment, and a narrow cylindrical hole drilled through the central capstone that was aimed directly at the North Star, Polaris. You don't build astronomical alignments like these unless you expect the monument to function as a long-term timekeeping device.
