Yes FMVSS 218 is a manufacturer standard. In California, CHP often still cites riders for attached GoPros as making the helmet non DOT compliant.

pro tip: even when the cop is wrong for his reason to stop, refusing a direct order is going to lead to your arrest. You're much better off complying and giving them your ID and fighting the wrongful ticket in the courts, than to disobey the request and thus commit a crime.

Solid tip. For drivers, ID is required in a stop. Document it and contest the ticket afterward instead of refusing on the spot

Thats an incorrect way of framing it, but in some places, in this specific situation, the way its mounted causes weakness in the helmet since its focused on drilling holes for the mount and not protecting the head which is its main purpose.

That’s a stupid law and it should be challenged in court. A camera on you helmet is not a safety issue just like the laptop cops look at driving down the road.
