Andy Griffith Went From Mayberry to the Moon Most of us remember Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, keeping the peace in Mayberry. But in 1979, he tried something considerably more ambitious. He went to the Moon. 😂 In the short-lived ABC series Salvage 1, Griffith played Harry Broderick, a junkyard owner with an outrageous business idea: build his own spaceship, fly to the Moon, collect equipment abandoned during the Apollo missions—and bring it home to sell. And Harry actually built the thing. His homemade spacecraft, appropriately named the Vulture, incorporated salvaged equipment including a cement mixer, a gasoline tanker trailer and surplus rocket engines. Then Harry recruited a former astronaut and a fuel expert to help make his lunar junkyard run possible. The premise sounds like somebody dreamed it up over a few beers. But Salvage 1 took its science seriously enough to have legendary science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov serve as a scientific adviser. The series didn't last long. ABC aired it during 1979. But for one wonderfully strange moment in television history, Sheriff Taylor traded Mayberry for a homemade rocket—and went looking for junk on the Moon. ❤️

Badenoch: “Take a look at President Trump. He’s shown that sometimes you need that first stint in government to spot the problems, but it’s the second time around that you really know how to fix them.” Trump is dismantling US democracy and replacing it with authoritarianism.
