Now that many governments are introducing age verification for unsuitable content, Discord has to roll out age checks for a decent portion of its 200 million active users. But it's also the start of a defining test, as Sky's Rowland Manthorpe explains. 🔗

Discord has begun rolling out age verification that estimates whether users are adults or teenagers based on their activity on the platform. This marks the beginning of the end of internet anonymity, with users potentially being pushed toward identification or other verification when Discord decides its age estimate is wrong. The system also may not solve the problem it's supposed to address. Predators could potentially manipulate the behavioral signals being used to estimate age, while ordinary users are forced to surrender more privacy. And it isn't stopping with Discord. YouTube already uses activity to estimate users' ages, and the concern is that identity and age checks will increasingly become a requirement across the major platforms people use every day.

Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that the EU will introduce a new mandatory EU age verification app for social media. The new law proposal will be presented after the summer. People creating new social media accounts will have to prove that they are above a certain age as the plans are to introduce social media bans for young people. Users will need a passport, ID card or digital ID to generate “over X age” proofs for platforms. For now, it seems that it will target new accounts but some are also pushing for retroactive ID requirement to verify already existing social media accounts.

♦️ Must Watch ♦️ EFF MP Mazwi Blose - MP joins eNCA to break down the Electoral Amendment Bill and why the EFF is pushing for automatic voter registration from the age of 16. Blose explains that the IEC currently lacks the capacity to report how many eligible voters are turned away on election day for not being registered. “There are about 13.5 million people who are eligible to vote but not on the voters' roll,”. To address this, the EFF has submitted a Private Member’s Bill that would use national population data to automatically register all South Africans from the age of 16, a bold move to strengthen democratic participation.

Breaking: Albanese bans YouTube for users under 16 years old as a way of forcing age verification on all social media users in Australia. I'm pretty sure this will prove to be very unpopular with the majority of Aussies when they finally figure out that they have been conned.

AOC: We don’t have to talk about this as if it’s a hypothetical issue. Just a couple of months ago, Discord tried to roll out “age verification.” They contracted with a third party to conduct facial scanning — not just of kids, but also of adults. They decided to launch a teen default setting where they would lock users into a teen-appropriate experience. Which, mind you, if you are an adult who does not opt in, you then get cordoned off into the teen experience. Explain to me how that has anything to do with children’s safety. The only way to get out of that censored version is by scanning your face. What’s more shocking is that Discord made the decision to move forward with this after they had been hacked and 70,000 users had their data stolen.
