That’s ironic considering Gaza is the only place in the region that has a neighborhood called Harat al-Abeed / “the slaves’ quarter” In the Al-Jalla’a district. Pre-October 2023 estimates put the Afro population there at around 11,000 (roughly 1% of Gaza’s population). The name abeed is Arabic for “slaves” and is still used as a description for blacks.

Today I urged the government to clearly set out the timeline for when Palestine will be recognised as a state. We need to move past vague promises and see real action on the recognition of Palestine.
