Yesterday, Premier Danielle Smith and I unveiled the route of the new 3,300-kilometre Northern Shield Energy Corridor from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario. By connecting Alberta oil with Ontario refineries through a pipeline made with Canadian steel, we’re creating jobs and protecting workers in every part of Canada.

When Ontario committed to building the first Small Modular Reactor in the G7, we did so with a clear objective: leverage our first-mover advantage to fire up Ontario’s supply chain and industrial base. Proud to announce a new agreement between GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Velan Inc. to export #MadeInCanada components for European SMRs, worth up to $70 million for each reactor. In addition, we announced that Velan will build a global manufacturing facility in Durham Region. With an estimated $600 billion in global SMR investment ahead, Ontario’s first-mover leadership is creating 18,000 good-paying jobs for Canadians.

There are multiple reliable energy breakthroughs underway that can actually keep up with America's demand, Energy Secretary Chris Wright tells me. He gave an inside look at the massive shifts Trump is implementing for our future: “Next-generation geothermal is coming. We got a 500-megawatt plant under construction in Utah, mining the heat underneath your feet. President Trump set aggressive agendas in May of last year to say we're going to get three next-generation nuclear reactors critical by July 4th. We had four reactors critical by July 4th and another one coming soon. We'll be getting electricity in remote areas from nuclear reactors by the end of next year, and a meaningful amount of it by 2028. We've got all sorts of gas turbines under construction. We've got [a] new pipeline to bring low-cost natural gas to communities… So there is cool stuff coming in energy technology.”

When we allow these EVs into our market virtually tariff-free, we facilitate the exodus of billions in economic activity and the thousands of good paying jobs it provides. Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand on nuclear cooperation with Türkiye: Canada is an energy superpower. Canada's CANDU reactors are used all over the world, in many different places from Argentina to Romania. As the license holder of this technology, we would like to see further cooperation, particularly in nuclear energy. I delivered the letter written by Minister Wilkinson to Minister Bayraktar so that discussions on CANDU can continue. These negotiations are still at the very beginning. The visit to Darlington allowed Minister Fidan and me to observe on-site the work we have been conducting on SMR technology and the nuclear field for some time. Canada is a leading country in these sectors, and we will continue to utilize our strength in this area.

So today, I’ve issued an executive order designed to speed up the development of new clean nuclear power so we can increase our electricity supply and secure our energy future. My goal is to deliver at least two gigawatts of new clean nuclear capacity in our state — enough to power up to two million Illinois homes. For Illinois households and businesses, expanded supply will make electricity less expensive, more reliable, and cleaner — while creating thousands of jobs and maintaining our state’s status as a net energy exporter.
