On this day, 64 years ago, Chris Marker's "La Jetée" (1962) was released in France. Chris Marker talks about "Twelve Monkeys" (1995), how he made "La Jetée" (1962), & one thing he valued more than the Oscars: "Marker: (...)There is too much to see on the news, on the music channels or on the indispensable Animal Channel. And I feed my hunger for fiction with what is by far the most accomplished source: those great American TV series, like 'The Practice' inspired a video by David Bowie and a film by Terry Gilliam. And there’s also a bar called “La Jetée,” in Japan. Interviewer: How do you feel about this cult? Does Terry Gilliam’s imagination intersect with yours? Marker: Terry’s imagination is rich enough that there’s no need to play with comparisons. Certainly, for me '12 Monkeys' (1995) is a magnificent film (there are people who think they are flattering me by saying otherwise, that 'La Jetée' is much better—the world is a strange place). It’s just one of the happy signs, like Bowie’s video, like the bar in Shinjuku (Hello, Tomoyo! To know that for almost 40 years, a group of Japanese are getting slightly drunk beneath my images every night—that’s worth more to me than any number of Oscars!), that have accompanied the strange destiny of this particular film. It was made like a piece of automatic writing. I was filming 'Le Joli mai' (1963), completely immersed in the reality of Paris 1962, and the euphoric discovery of “direct cinema” (you will never make me say “cinema verité”) and on the crew’s day off, I photographed a story I didn’t completely understand. It was in the editing that the pieces of the puzzle came together, and it wasn’t me who designed the puzzle. I’d have a hard time taking credit for it. It just happened, that’s all. (Chris Marker's interview to Film Comment, 2003)

A map from 1531 reveals something that could rewrite all of human history. “The map maker tells us he uncovered material previously hidden in darkness … ” If you’ve never heard of the Orontius Finaeus map, this will blow your mind: Graham Hancock: “The Orontius Finaeus map shows Antarctica.” “This map was drawn in 1531.” “The problem is that our civilization didn’t discover Antarctica until 1820.” This map is a key piece of evidence that Hancock raises to support his theory of a lost, ancient civilization. “When I say a lost civilization, I do not mean a civilization like ours.” “I think they were very different civilization from ours.” “But they had conquered a number of peaks.” “One of those peaks was navigation and ocean seafaring.” “Hence the survival of maps, which show the world as it looked during the Ice Age.” “Another was astronomy.” “Another really important breakthrough evidenced by the ancient maps … is accurate relative longitudes.” “Particularly when we know that the map was based on older source maps.” “Had somebody found Antarctica long before we did and mapped it with extremely accurate relative longitudes?” “Our civilization didn’t crack the longitude problem until the mid-18th century.” “We didn’t get that until 1750, 1760s, there abouts, with Harrison’s chronometer.” “So finding good longitudes on very ancient maps is another puzzle that I don’t think archeology solved.” Graham Hancock Steven Bartlett

I have a pi-day challenge for all the physics students among you (or anyone willing to set up an experiment). If you share your results with me by March 10th, I may feature them in a video, depending on how good the results are and how many I get. Many years ago I made this video about how two colliding blocks on a frictionless plane can compute pi. My challenge to you is simple: Implement this in practice. The original puzzle assumes zero friction and zero energy loss in collisions, so obviously there are limits to how far you can get. I can tell you the real limiting factor is energy lost in collisions, more so than friction. Also, it's a wildly inefficient way to compute pi, to even get "3.14" you'd need this to work with a 10,000-to-1 mass ratio and have a way to count all 314 collisions. Matt Parker and I actually gave this a go, and the results were...okay, but could definitely have been improved :) Note, there's no reason to restrict yourself to powers of 100. For example, you could use powers of 4 to compute pi in binary. A mass ratio of 64-to-1 should give 25 collisions, which is 11001 in binary, and pi looks like 11.001... More generally, with a mass ratio of N-to-1, the number of collisions is around π / arctan(1 / sqrt(N)). So any big mass ratio gives you an approximation of pi by multiplying the number of collisions by arctan(1/sqrt(N)) If you do this, you can reach out to the channel via this page: Be sure to have a link to footage of the experiment. If anyone can get it to work with 100-to-1, I'd be happy, and if anyone can do it for 10,000-to-1, I'd be both delighted and amazed.
