That’s why highly varied, functional sports like climbing, jiu-jitsu, and surfing are the best forms of exercise. They hit all the dimensions of fitness, including mind-body connection, which is crucial for brain health and longevity. Start with a 3-minute deep squat each morning. A person asks Sadhguru, “How much weight training exercise do you recommend?” And Sadhguru answers, “Weight training is not useful, but do 25-50 Surya-Namaskars, it is complete exercise.” First of all, I am not sure why anyone would ask someone like Sadhguru, who is most of the time, in another dimension, a question on exercise and weight training. And secondly, Sadhguru is just plain wrong. Weight (or strength) training is one of the most important aspects of exercise regimen you can include in your daily or 3-4 times a week physical activity because there is great science behind its benefits. I advise my obese or sarcopenic (very poor muscle mass in advanced liver disease) patients to include weight training to improve clinical outcomes. The highest level of scientific evidence showed that standard muscle-strengthening activities were associated with lower risk of death in patients with non-communicable diseases – including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lung cancer. Another metanalysis showed strong evidence for a considerable risk reduction of strength training for 60 minutes a week, on all-cause death (−15%), cardiovascular disease death (−19%), and cancer death (−14%). In Iyengar Yoga there is a way, in Ashtanga Vinayasa Yoga there is Type A and B and there are other types followed by other schools or Yoga teachers. Along with the stretching and jumping, which is done is a slow and steady manner, the practice includes chanting a “mantra” calling out twelve names of the Sun God. In its classical form, Surya Namaskar is not an exercise, and is not aerobic. The energy cost of exercise is measured in units of metabolic equivalent of task (MET). Less than 3 METs counts as light exercise; 3 to 6 METs is moderate; 6 or over is vigorous. American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association guidelines count periods of at least 10 minutes of moderate MET level activity towards their recommended daily amounts of exercise. For healthy adults aged 18 to 65, the guidelines recommend moderate exercise for 30 minutes five days a week, or vigorous aerobic exercise for 20 minutes three days a week. Surya Namaskar in its classical form has a measly 2.9 METs and in its rigorous form (some people perform mutated highly active forms of Surya Namaskar to make it feel like an exercise) can go up to 7.4 METs – which requires a lot of jumping and little stretching and no time to chant the Sun God names - does not even come close to strength training by any margin. The Board of REACT19 regrets to inform our community of the sudden cancellation of this week’s meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at the CDC. The meeting was cancelled following a federal court ruling that blocked recent vaccine policy changes and invalidated the current ACIP advisory panel while legal challenges move forward. For many in our community, this meeting represented a long-awaited opportunity. After more than five years of waiting, patients and families had prepared impact statements in hopes that the urgent need for clinical recognition, research, and care for those suffering from serious post-vaccination conditions would finally be discussed. For those living with these conditions, this cancellation is deeply painful. It means more waiting, more uncertainty, and more time without the clinical guidance needed to help physicians recognize, diagnose, and treat patients who have been suffering for years. Our hearts are with every member of this community who had hoped their voice would finally be heard this week. However, even in this difficult moment, important progress continues. On March 18, REACT19 will still be part of a historic step forward at the CDC. A proposal for a new ICD-10 diagnostic code related to post-COVID-19 vaccination conditions will be presented, opening a public comment period and moving the medical system closer to formally recognizing these patients. Diagnostic codes are more than administrative tools. They are a critical foundation for clinical recognition, medical education, research, insurance coverage, and ultimately the development of treatments. Establishing an ICD-10 code would represent an important step toward building the clinical infrastructure needed to care for patients who have too often been left without answers. While the cancellation of the ACIP meeting is a heartbreaking setback for our community, the work to achieve medical recognition and appropriate care continues. After being hit by shrapnel, or undergoing surgery, or suffering from illnesses, these cases have no nutritional support and no strength for their bodies to heal. Each meal cost 25 shekels and weighed 500 grams. The head of the nursing department gave us special permission to access these patients and staff to assist. The initiative cost a total of approximately $825 after 10% transfer commission. Father, This blessed Sunday morning, I come to you in prayer, my heart heavy that twelve truckers lost their lives on American highways this week. We know that if twelve firefighters or nurses were to pass away in the line of duty each week, the media would be in an uproar. But for some reason, the loss of these hardworking and dedicated truckers doesn't seem to receive the same attention. Lord, I ask for Your blessings and protection over my brothers and sisters who are out on the roads day and night. From my fellow heavy-haulers to flatbed truckers, from class B to class C drivers, please watch over them all and keep them safe from harm. May they feel Your presence with them as they navigate through challenging and often dangerous terrain.
