In fact, too much strength/mass is detrimental to longevity. Just look around—the fittest, most physically capable people in their 50s and beyond aren’t meatheads. You want to be lean, mobile, and strong *enough*. 🪛Maintaining range of motion and healthy spine/joints should be the #1 priority—and the older you get the more you need to “tighten the screws”. That’s why highly varied, functional sports like climbing, jiu-jitsu, and surfing are the best forms of exercise. They hit all the dimensions of fitness, including mind-body connection, which is crucial for brain health and longevity. Start with a 3-minute deep squat each morning. The deep squat is called “the anti-aging exercise”—it’s one movement that builds strength and mobility in your ankles, knees, hips and lower back. 3 minutes a day now, or a lifetime of pain and limitations later.

A person asks Sadhguru, “How much weight training exercise do you recommend?” And Sadhguru answers, “Weight training is not useful, but do 25-50 Surya-Namaskars, it is complete exercise.” First of all, I am not sure why anyone would ask someone like Sadhguru, who is most of the time, in another dimension, a question on exercise and weight training. And secondly, Sadhguru is just plain wrong. Weight (or strength) training is one of the most important aspects of exercise regimen you can include in your daily or 3-4 times a week physical activity because there is great science behind its benefits. I advise my obese or sarcopenic (very poor muscle mass in advanced liver disease) patients to include weight training to improve clinical outcomes. The highest level of scientific evidence showed that standard muscle-strengthening activities were associated with lower risk of death in patients with non-communicable diseases – including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lung cancer. Another metanalysis showed strong evidence for a considerable risk reduction of strength training for 60 minutes a week, on all-cause death (−15%), cardiovascular disease death (−19%), and cancer death (−14%). The findings of another systematic review/metanalysis support power (strength) training as an effective therapeutic intervention for improving physical function in adults diagnosed with frailty (poor physical function in old age) and patients with chronic medical conditions. Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a sequence of around twelve yoga poses connected by jumping or stretching movements, varying somewhat between various Yoga schools – which means, it has no regulation or standardization unlike weight training. In Iyengar Yoga there is a way, in Ashtanga Vinayasa Yoga there is Type A and B and there are other types followed by other schools or Yoga teachers. Along with the stretching and jumping, which is done is a slow and steady manner, the practice includes chanting a “mantra” calling out twelve names of the Sun God. In its classical form, Surya Namaskar is not an exercise, and is not aerobic. The energy cost of exercise is measured in units of metabolic equivalent of task (MET). Less than 3 METs counts as light exercise; 3 to 6 METs is moderate; 6 or over is vigorous. American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association guidelines count periods of at least 10 minutes of moderate MET level activity towards their recommended daily amounts of exercise. For healthy adults aged 18 to 65, the guidelines recommend moderate exercise for 30 minutes five days a week, or vigorous aerobic exercise for 20 minutes three days a week. Surya Namaskar in its classical form has a measly 2.9 METs and in its rigorous form (some people perform mutated highly active forms of Surya Namaskar to make it feel like an exercise) can go up to 7.4 METs – which requires a lot of jumping and little stretching and no time to chant the Sun God names - does not even come close to strength training by any margin. Those who are part of the Surya Namaskar and Yoga cult would provide anecdotal experiences on its benefits (please see comment section) through non-classical forms and would call it an “exhilarating experience.” Experiences are not scientific, evidence are. Many Yoga journals and some dubious and third rate Ayurveda journals have also have published on such experiences in small group of patients, which are not validated or published in better journals [like this junk here: There are no metanalysis level data to prove effectiveness of Surya Namaskar as beneficial as aerobic exercise or better than strength training as Sadhguru claims. Do Surya namaskar if you are doing nothing. But upgrade to strength training if you want something. Sadhguru suffers seriously from Dunning Kruger fallacy: a type of cognitive bias, where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. The Refaat Alareer Camp is a medical camp, meaning we have criteria for the families that we bring in who have vulnerable conditions, chronic illnesses or injuries, so that we utilize our services and facilities to benefit those who need help the most. We have an onsite medical clinic that cares for our camp families, takes in patients from the area, and also fills medication and treatment requests we refer to them. Our team of nurses and doctors work diligently to host medical days to quell outbreaks of communicable diseases, provide nutritional support to hospital patients, and visit families in dire need who cannot afford even transport to see a doctor. They are heroes in a collapsing healthcare system. Our medical team recently held complete medical assessments for every resident in the camp. We have patients with amputated legs, shrapnel injuries, quadriplegia, brain damage, cerebral palsy, cardiac conditions, psychological disorders, burns, and more. They all need regular and specific medical care and medication they otherwise would not have access to, but that we of course provide. The Board of REACT19 regrets to inform our community of the sudden cancellation of this week’s meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at the CDC. The meeting was cancelled following a federal court ruling that blocked recent vaccine policy changes and invalidated the current ACIP advisory panel while legal challenges move forward. For many in our community, this meeting represented a long-awaited opportunity. After more than five years of waiting, patients and families had prepared impact statements in hopes that the urgent need for clinical recognition, research, and care for those suffering from serious post-vaccination conditions would finally be discussed. For those living with these conditions, this cancellation is deeply painful. It means more waiting, more uncertainty, and more time without the clinical guidance needed to help physicians recognize, diagnose, and treat patients who have been suffering for years. Our hearts are with every member of this community who had hoped their voice would finally be heard this week. However, even in this difficult moment, important progress continues. On March 18, REACT19 will still be part of a historic step forward at the CDC. A proposal for a new ICD-10 diagnostic code related to post-COVID-19 vaccination conditions will be presented, opening a public comment period and moving the medical system closer to formally recognizing these patients. Diagnostic codes are more than administrative tools. They are a critical foundation for clinical recognition, medical education, research, insurance coverage, and ultimately the development of treatments. Establishing an ICD-10 code would represent an important step toward building the clinical infrastructure needed to care for patients who have too often been left without answers. While the cancellation of the ACIP meeting is a heartbreaking setback for our community, the work to achieve medical recognition and appropriate care continues. If the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services prevails in its appeal, the ACIP process may resume. In the meantime, REACT19 remains committed to ensuring that the voices of patients are heard and that progress toward recognition, research, and care does not stop. We’re overfed but undernourished. 60% of all calories Americans consume come from ultra-processed foods that: • Fail to induce proper satiety, pushing us to overeat. • Remain cheaper than whole foods, economically incentivizing the least healthy choices. • Hijack our dopamine reward pathways, reinforcing addictive eating behaviors. This trifecta—no satiety, low cost, and built-in addictiveness—keeps us in a cycle of poor health outcomes and runaway healthcare costs. But caloric excess is only part of the problem—we are also nutrient-deficient. Low omega-3 levels—affecting 80 to 90% of Americans—carry the same mortality risk as smoking. It’s about survival. • Higher muscle mass means improved insulin sensitivity - it means a 30% lower mortality risk. • Grip strength is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular mortality - the number one cause of death in the United States - than high blood pressure. • The strongest middle-aged adults have a 42% lower dementia risk. And yet, we treat resistance training as optional. It is not. It is the most powerful intervention we have against aging including increasing muscle mass, strength and bone density. As they are fighting hard to survive, their bodies are fending off hunger and trying to recover. Even those who care for patients, the dedicated nurses and doctors, who show up for work every day to see and deal with the unimaginable, to continue to try to save lives, are fainting from their hunger pains. The Sameer Project recently visited the Surgical Department of Al Shifa Hospital where we distributed 100 bulgur meals to the entire ward, as well as the nurses in the department. Each meal cost 25 shekels and weighed 500 grams. The head of the nursing department gave us special permission to access these patients and staff to assist. The initiative cost a total of approximately $825 after 10% transfer commission. We try to provide for those in the most dire need, and unfortunately if you are in the surgical department of Al Shifa, this is the case. We know that if twelve firefighters or nurses were to pass away in the line of duty each week, the media would be in an uproar. But for some reason, the loss of these hardworking and dedicated truckers doesn't seem to receive the same attention. Lord, I ask for Your blessings and protection over my brothers and sisters who are out on the roads day and night. From my fellow heavy-haulers to flatbed truckers, from class B to class C drivers, please watch over them all and keep them safe from harm. Father, This blessed Sunday morning, I come to you in prayer, my heart heavy that twelve truckers lost their lives on American highways this week. We know that if twelve firefighters or nurses were to pass away in the line of duty each week, the media would be in an uproar. But for some reason, the loss of these hardworking and dedicated truckers doesn't seem to receive the same attention. Lord, I ask for Your blessings and protection over my brothers and sisters who are out on the roads day and night. From my fellow heavy-haulers to flatbed truckers, from class B to class C drivers, please watch over them all and keep them safe from harm.
