The Northland Dirt Scandal Keeps Getting Weirder They're building a soccer stadium on the site now, and the developer seems to have ties to the FBI By Charlie LeDuff Charlie LeDuff Southfield — Things are getting weird at the old Northland Mall site. Tough-guy tactics, a federal sting, dirty dirt, and a soccer terrordome. Workers for developers at the 114-acre plot in the middle of Southfield were picking cement blocks out of the mountains of dirt last week and then moving the dirt to the northern edge of the urban wasteland. Across the street are Providence Hospital, a day-care center, and a mega church. Previously, tons of this dirt made its way into Detroit’s demolition holes. Detroit officials had the “soil” tested and it’s shown to be excessively contaminated and suspiciously similar to highway junk. Like how bad? Like children-shouldn’t-play-near-it bad. Like long-term-cancer bad. My partner Ken and I went there last Friday to film the plumes of dust being kicked up by an excavator, a dump truck, and a bulldozer pushing dirt around the lot. That’s when a surly dude in a heavy-duty pick-up rolled up on us. He gave the stink-eye. The voodoo vibe. The grim peeper. He never rolled down his window and never said a word. He just idled for some time before driving away, only to cut a circle and do it all over again. The job was shut down for a good hour-and-a-half while this dude worked the phone. The FBI is on the case, which now sprawls across two counties in southeastern Michigan. Workers and subcontractors are spilling their guts. Mike Duggan was forced to fall on his sword and drop out of the governor’s race. And the city of Southfield can’t—or won’t—produce soil analytics. Weird. In the midst of all this, the Southfield city council last month approved a 120,000-square-foot sports dome on the site that will be home to the Detroit City FC South Oakland soccer team. When reached by telephone, the soccer club’s CEO Marcel Schmid said he had not seen soil analytics. “But it was discussed before the vote,” Schmid said. “If the city’s not concerned about it, then we’re not concerned about it.” Suit yourself, Marcel, but you’ll never see me at the concession stand. Why doesn’t the city of Southfield simply have the soil tested and post the results to the public? Where is the county in all this? The state? The feds? While the FBI is indeed investigating the environmental scandal, I don’t think much will come of this considering that the Northland developer—Contour Companies—may be a confidential source for the federal government. Consider: Contour Companies was involved in a major FBI public corruption sting in Jackson, Mississippi. In short, FBI agents posed as out-of-state developers, proposing a multi-million-dollar hotel project to the mayor there. The FBI straw company partnered with the real-life Contour Companies to create a bogus development scheme and then bribe local Jackson officials. In a scene straight out of “Donnie Brasco,” the mayor of Jackson was plied with booze and boobs before he was filmed on a yacht in Miami taking bags of cash from undercover agents. Why would a legitimate development company based in Michigan lend its name to an out-of-state FBI sting? That can’t be good for business. In the phony pitch to the mayor of Jackson, Contour claimed its $500 million Northland future city project—backstopped with millions of dollars in public subsidies —would be completed by the end of this calendar year. Fuhgeddaboudit. Meanwhile, the federal corruption trial of the mayor of Jackson begins next month.

People Call Me for Help Because Our Leaders Are Screwing Us Any wrongdoing by Whitmer or Benson has been ignored by Dana Nessel, and the Republicans are sitting on their hands By Charlie LeDuff Charlie LeDuff I received a handwritten note this week. “HELP!” it read. “PLEASE hear my story. Wayne County employees and Affiliates are bullying me. Big Corporations and City Officials, I AM the community.” It was signed, Linda. I also got a call from Paul, a firefighter, last week. He wanted help looking into the connections between a string of arsons and city officials. I got another call from Ray, a guy who once helped me identify the victim of a serial killer. He had a convoluted tip about corruption in Detroit. I get dozens of contacts like this every week from every corner of the state. People who have been victimized by the very government they voted for. I try to help them. But I’ve got my hands full. I’m going through thousands of pages of nursing home Covid documents. The state of Michigan charged me thousands of dollars to get them. The best I can make out, Gov. Whitmer’s nursing home response was a deadly fraud. It cries out for an official investigation. But Attorney General Dana Nessel refuses to conduct one. Why? Whitmer, during that time, hopped on a businessman’s jet plane and took a trip to Palm Beach. When caught, she claimed her campaign fund paid for it. If true, that would be illegal. Again, no investigation. At the same time, Nessel took a luxurious vacation with her wife to Turks and Caicos, which was paid for by a prominent law firm with business before the state. Again, no investigation. Here’s where it gets sick. It was the Republican leadership in Lansing that made Whitmer’s nursing home investigation go away. It was a “go along to get along” arrangement. Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey was able to avoid felony charges for campaign finance fraud. In the meantime, Shirkey’s money-raising minions were charged. One faces 14 years in prison. The Republican House Speaker at the time, Lee Chatfield, avoided his own corruption charges until he was out of office. It was only then that Chat the Brat was ratted out by his brother and sister-in-law. He stands accused of using campaign funds for jets, hotel rooms, prostitutes, and drugs. Nessel’s wife was caught up in a similar campaign finance scheme as Shirkey. The root of money in both cases came from DTE’s nonprofit. Meanwhile, our energy bills continue to skyrocket. Documents show that Nessel colluded with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson—who had issued a criminal referral to Nessel regarding a ballot committee connected to Nessel’s wife. Nessel asked Benson to make it go away. Nessel’s wife, nor anyone connected to her, has never been charged. Benson has not been investigated for that, nor for violating numerous election laws, nor for accepting thousands of donations that appear to have been made from straw donors using stolen identities of elderly people. Benson’s husband, Ryan Friedrichs, was investigated for destroying evidence that showed that his then-boss, Mayor Mike Duggan, was funneling public money into a nonprofit run by Duggan’s mistress. Nessel looked casually into that. Nothing came of it. Friedrichs, now a lobbyist, stands to make millions of dollars from a data center that local residents clearly don’t want. Duggan and current Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield are trying to cover up their roles in the mass dirt poisoning in the city of Detroit. Sheffield was sleeping with the accused demolition contractor and even voted to give Lover Boy millions more in work while they were canoodling. When confronted with these facts, Sheffield lied to the public. They’ll probably get away with it, though. Just as Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and his syndicate got away with the mass water poisoning of Flint. No one did a day in jail for that debacle. You can thank the incompetent and insidious Dana Nessel. Again. And you can thank Nessel for interfering in a criminal investigation into her drinking buddy, Tracy Kornak, the former treasurer of the state Democratic Party. Kornak was accused of ripping off a brain-damaged elderly woman four years ago. Nessel made that case go away. Whitmer, also a wine pal, was going to make Kornak a judge. That is until a local prosecutor opened his own abuse case. Kornak now faces four felony charges and 15 years in prison. Nessel was subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee, which was looking into Nessel’s handling of both cases against her wife and Kornak. When Nessel refused to produce documents, the committee hit her with contempt charges. But Republican House Speaker Matt Hall sits on his hands, refusing to bring it to a vote because it doesn’t seem to fit his political calculus. To hell with accountability. Michigan politics is a massive orgy where politicians get off and the public gets screwed. No one is more frustrated than me, Linda. I will call you. But no promises. Shooting the messenger? Rebel News reporter BANNED FOR LIFE from visiting Tim Hortons! Just when you think you’ve seen everything, along comes a story about a double-double turning into double trouble… You may recall our recent reports regarding Tim Hortons. We exposed the company for lying through its teeth at a recent presser. Tim Hortons said they were going to go back to hiring Canadian citizens. That would be great news if only it were true. That’s because Tim’s is STILL making use of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program! Check out the federal government’s job board. Tim’s currently has about 90 positions available under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Sure, Tim Hortons loves selling its wares to Canadians. As for hiring Canadians? Nah. Not so much… But get this: we discovered Tim Hortons has a very thin skin. Because when the executives at Canada’s biggest foodservice company saw our reports, they blew a fuse! You see, Tim’s is used to getting positive press from the mainstream media. Tim’s is one of the largest advertisers in Canada. This company has a cozy business arrangement with the trained seals in the mainstream media. And it boils down to this: report nice stuff about Tim’s, and Tim’s will cut some big cheques for ads. Quid pro quo. But unlike the mainstream media, Rebel News is not domesticated. We don’t bend the knee to this company or any other company. And so it was that Tim’s decided to play hardball. Which is to say, the company was so infuriated with our reporting that Rebel News was sent a legal letter. Here’s the skinny: for practicing unauthorized and unapproved journalism, I am now BANNED FOR LIFE from going to any Tim Hortons store in Canada! We’re not making this up! Here’s an excerpt from that letter: “David Menzies, due to past behaviour, is not, for any reason, permitted access to the premises, including parking lots, landscaped areas, and drive-thrus of any Tim Hortons restaurant in Canada, any and all manufacturing and distribution facilities owned or operated by TDL across Canada and the Tim Hortons offices in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto.” The letter is signed by a Mr. Tim Bit. (OK, we made up that last part. But the truth is, we don’t know who signed the letter because we can’t read the signature. But it sure looks like “Tim Bit” to us…) But seriously, such a cruel punishment, eh? You see, I can no longer purchase an inedible edible that tastes like a piece of rancid cardboard. I cannot venture into a bathroom that resembles a public beach in Mumbai, India. I can no longer gaze upon a baked goods display case overrun by insects. Oh, say it ain’t so! Gee, what other “delights” can I look forward to being banned from? Going for a scenic drive in Kapuskasing during a winter blizzard? Being denied floor seats at a Yoko Ono concert? Oh, the humanity…! Don’t worry, Tim’s. I promise to stay out of your filthy restaurants and never again consume your garbage cuisine. Besides, in the months ahead, some 700 Dunkin’ Donuts are going to open in Canada. We can’t wait! But get this: even me being on a public sidewalk near a Tim Hortons is unacceptable to the Tim Wits. That’s what we found out last Thursday when we returned to the Aurora Tim’s. Myself and cameraman Lincoln Jay obeyed the legal letter and recorded a follow-up video from the sidewalk along Wellington Street East. Alas, the mere sight of Rebel News staffers – even from afar – had the owner frothing mad. He actually called the cops! And incredibly, THREE York Regional Police cruisers rushed to the scene of the non-crime. They lingered there for more than an hour. Why? Who knows? Oh, just to put things in perspective, York Region is in the midst of its worst crime wave ever. And this is what law enforcement squanders its resources on? Unbelievable… So, in the final analysis, what have we learned about Tim Hortons? Firstly, this company is run by a bunch of traitors. Tim Hortons, which grossly wraps itself in the Maple Leaf, prefers to hire noncitizens over Canadians. Because this multi-billion dollar company is all about the bottom line and it will use any nickel-and-dime strategy to boost profits. Ethics mean nothing to this company. Secondly, Tim Hortons is run by bullies. We caught them in a blatant lie. And we called them out. And for the utter temerity of reporting the truth, they threaten me with arrest? These are Banana Republic garbage tactics. How sad. We think of the late great hockey player for whom this company is named. That Tim Horton must be rolling in his grave right now. The District Attorney race in Travis County/Greater Austin is among the most important this cycle. Everyone able should vote by March 5th. Watch this video and read the following to understand why – and share with others. I don’t like to get directly involved in politics, and prefer to stick to building social enterprises that bring people together (i.e., KIND Snacks, Builders, SOMOS Foods, Empatico ), but the stakes are so high for Austin that I feel the need to share some facts: Austin is facing a rampant rise in crime. All the data demonstrates it. And all of Jose Garza’s policies point to it. Some specific examples: • Garza let Santos Celso-Flores, who was awaiting trial for participating in the gang rape of 13-year-old girl, out on a $40 bond. While out on bond, Celso-Flores molested two more young girls. • Hilario Adrian’s bond was lowered to just $1 after Garza failed to bring his aggravated assault case to a grand jury in time. Shortly after his release, he brutally attacked an innocent bystander in downtown Austin, stabbing him to death. • Richard Williams brutally raped his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint for two hours while strangling and beating her. Garza cut a deferred adjudication plea deal with Williams, meaning he was released after just 90 days in prison without anything on his record. • Garza released Dedreuain Reese, who had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for pistol-whipping a woman, on a personal recognizance bond. Just weeks after he was released on bond, Reese committed a murder at the same house where he pistol whipped the woman. Friends have been telling me about the rise in crime in Austin. A family who lived downtown had their home burglarized. Another was held up. A friend who leads the Public Safety Commission shared the above examples. I assumed these were isolated cases and initially dismissed the issue. Eventually I did dozens of hours of research. The data is staggering: • 127% increase in the murder rate since Garza took over! • Car jackings more than doubled! • Convictions are down 61%! • Zero Jury Trials by Garza since he took over as DA! How is Garza responsible for this? Some examples: • When he took office, Garza abolished the DA division that sorted out cases. As a result, today there are over seven thousand unindicted felony crimes! Not 7. Not 70. Not 700. Seven THOUSAND pending cases that the DA’s office has failed to process. • In 2021, Garza released a bail reform plan that explicitly included releasing people on bail for just $1. Since then, Travis County has been plagued by crimes committed by people out on bonds. • Over 75 (out of a professional staff of around 95) experienced prosecutors have left the DA's Office since Garza took over in 2021. He has hired inexperienced and untested lawyers to handle the most serious and complicated cases in Travis County. • Here is testimony from a Mother whose children were sexually assaulted: These are not theoretical issues. And the people they affect are the most vulnerable members of our society. • Lynn Isaak survived a brutal attack while running in Travis Heights. She solved her own case through Nextdoor, trusted the DA's Office with the prosecution, and was then shocked when her attacker got probation with no jail time and no electronic monitoring. • Lashonda Lemons was beaten so badly by her partner that she lost her baby. The DA's Office got the case and lowered the charge from aggravated assault to a lesser offense and gave him deferred adjudication - a punishment that allows the offender to walk away without a conviction. This was all done over Lemons' objection. There is hope on the horizon: Jeremy Sylestine is a lifelong Democrat running in the Democratic Primary for Travis District Attorney. He is Native American member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. He went to UT, served as a Public Defender, and then for 15 years as a highly respected member of the DA’s office in Travis County. Meet Jeremy: He is among the highest integrity people you can meet. He is sacrificing a very good job and risking a lot for the sake of Austin and Travis County. Jeremy is compassionate, but he understands the duty to protect the most vulnerable members of our community from violent criminals. It’s quite a contrast: It took me months to understand why, in contrast, Jose Garza would allow a violent criminal who drugged and raped a 13 year old girl to get off without anything on his record. Why would he plea down everything to misdemeanor, including when a violent felon beat his pregnant girlfriend so brutally that she lost her baby? Even the most kindhearted also want justice and public safety. But Garza has a radical ideology that ANY prosecution ever is evil. When he was a public defender, that position was acceptable. But as DA in charge of enforcing the law, he is subverting his duties and violating his oath. Under Garza’s simplistic ideology, everyone is a victim or an oppressor based on their background and position in society rather than based on their actions and behavior. For Garza, the criminals that commit violent crimes are the victims so even if they committed rape or murder they cannot be at fault. It’s the system’s fault. For Garza, the DA’s office he presides over is the oppressor and so he is slowly dismantling it (not just reform it, but dismantling it, which is why he disbanded the division that processes cases, resulting in over seven thousand unindicted criminal felonies thus far). It’s so extreme it’s illogical. But that is what radical extremism does. In terms of financial backing, virtually all support for Jeremy comes from people that live in Travis County. Garza came into power with $1 million from out of state money. The people that put Garza in power do not need to live with the consequences of his actions. Jeremy’s supporters are locals whose families and loved ones live in Travis County. Our only agenda is to protect the community. For us teachers, entrepreneurs and parents it’s uncomfortable to get drawn into politically divisive issues. But the stakes are so high that everyone is stepping in. It’s very unusual for other elected politicians to stand up against an incumbent from their party. The amount of Democratic leaders that I’ve met and have told me how much they dislike Garza but can’t speak up is stunning. The District Attorney race in Travis County/Greater Austin is among the most important this cycle. Everyone able should vote by March 5th. Watch this video and read the following to understand why – and share with others. I don’t like to get directly involved in politics, and prefer to stick to building social enterprises that bring people together (i.e., KIND Snacks, Builders, SOMOS Foods, Empatico ), but the stakes are so high for Austin that I feel the need to share some facts: Austin is facing a rampant rise in crime. All the data demonstrates it. And all of Jose Garza’s policies point to it. Some specific examples: • Garza let Santos Celso-Flores, who was awaiting trial for participating in the gang rape of 13-year-old girl, out on a $40 bond. While out on bond, Celso-Flores molested two more young girls. • Hilario Adrian’s bond was lowered to just $1 after Garza failed to bring his aggravated assault case to a grand jury in time. Shortly after his release, he brutally attacked an innocent bystander in downtown Austin, stabbing him to death. • Richard Williams brutally raped his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint for two hours while strangling and beating her. Garza cut a deferred adjudication plea deal with Williams, meaning he was released after just 90 days in prison without anything on his record. • Garza released Dedreuain Reese, who had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for pistol-whipping a woman, on a personal recognizance bond. Just weeks after he was released on bond, Reese committed a murder at the same house where he pistol whipped the woman. Friends have been telling me about the rise in crime in Austin. A family who lived downtown had their home burglarized. Another was held up. A friend who leads the Public Safety Commission shared the above examples. I assumed these were isolated cases and initially dismissed the issue. Eventually I did dozens of hours of research. The data is staggering: • 127% increase in the murder rate since Garza took over! • Car jackings more than doubled! • Convictions are down 61%! • Zero Jury Trials by Garza since he took over as DA! How is Garza responsible for this? Some examples: • When he took office, Garza abolished the DA division that sorted out cases. As a result, today there are over seven thousand unindicted felony crimes! Not 7. Not 70. Not 700. Seven THOUSAND pending cases that the DA’s office has failed to process. • In 2021, Garza released a bail reform plan that explicitly included releasing people on bail for just $1. Since then, Travis County has been plagued by crimes committed by people out on bonds. • Over 75 (out of a professional staff of around 95) experienced prosecutors have left the DA's Office since Garza took over in 2021. He has hired inexperienced and untested lawyers to handle the most serious and complicated cases in Travis County. • Here is testimony from a Mother whose children were sexually assaulted: These are not theoretical issues. And the people they affect are the most vulnerable members of our society. • Lynn Isaak survived a brutal attack while running in Travis Heights. She solved her own case through Nextdoor, trusted the DA's Office with the prosecution, and was then shocked when her attacker got probation with no jail time and no electronic monitoring. • Lashonda Lemons was beaten so badly by her partner that she lost her baby. The DA's Office got the case and lowered the charge from aggravated assault to a lesser offense and gave him deferred adjudication - a punishment that allows the offender to walk away without a conviction. This was all done over Lemons' objection. There is hope on the horizon: Jeremy Sylestine is a lifelong Democrat running in the Democratic Primary for Travis District Attorney. He is Native American member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. He went to UT, served as a Public Defender, and then for 15 years as a highly respected member of the DA’s office in Travis County. Meet Jeremy: He is among the highest integrity people you can meet. He is sacrificing a very good job and risking a lot for the sake of Austin and Travis County. Jeremy is compassionate, but he understands the duty to protect the most vulnerable members of our community from violent criminals. It’s quite a contrast: It took me months to understand why, in contrast, Jose Garza would allow a violent criminal who drugged and raped a 13 year old girl to get off without anything on his record. Why would he plea down everything to misdemeanor, including when a violent felon beat his pregnant girlfriend so brutally that she lost her baby? Even the most kindhearted also want justice and public safety. But Garza has a radical ideology that ANY prosecution ever is evil. When he was a public defender, that position was acceptable. But as DA in charge of enforcing the law, he is subverting his duties and violating his oath. Under Garza’s simplistic ideology, everyone is a victim or an oppressor based on their background and position in society rather than based on their actions and behavior. For Garza, the criminals that commit violent crimes are the victims so even if they committed rape or murder they cannot be at fault. It’s the system’s fault. For Garza, the DA’s office he presides over is the oppressor and so he is slowly dismantling it (not just reform it, but dismantling it, which is why he disbanded the division that processes cases, resulting in over seven thousand unindicted criminal felonies thus far). It’s so extreme it’s illogical. But that is what radical extremism does. In terms of financial backing, virtually all support for Jeremy comes from people that live in Travis County. Garza came into power with $1 million from out of state money. The people that put Garza in power do not need to live with the consequences of his actions. Jeremy’s supporters are locals whose families and loved ones live in Travis County. Our only agenda is to protect the community. For us teachers, entrepreneurs and parents it’s uncomfortable to get drawn into politically divisive issues. But the stakes are so high that everyone is stepping in. It’s very unusual for other elected politicians to stand up against an incumbent from their party. The amount of Democratic leaders that I’ve met and have told me how much they dislike Garza but can’t speak up is stunning. In the entertainment capital of the world - “Hollywood” - there are fewer television shows and movies being produced today than when Governor Newsom was arresting people for going to the beach. The downstream carnage is piling up across our city, and we aren’t going to shame or strike or tax our way out of it. Drive down Sunset Blvd and you’ll see countless “Jay Luchs - For Lease” signs draped like flowers at a funeral. Ask your friends working in retail, restaurants, or real estate just how bad things are, and you’ll be reminded that every business in our city flows downstream of the entertainment industry, the sword that LA lives by, and dies by. Rick Caruso, native Angeleno, creator of the Grove, & former mayoral candidate, has recently begun pleading to “bring Hollywood back,” ironically via TikTok, in order to protect all of the adjacent “below the line” businesses. It is the right end goal but the wrong strategy. But what can Mr Caruso do to bring Hollywood back? Ask the unions to ease up? They run this town, even when they cut off their nose to spite their face. Ask Sacramento to give up their fruitless addiction to over-taxation & regulation? It would be easier to convince Count Dracula to give up blood. Ask consumers to change their tastes and abandon TikTok? He’d certainly have my blessing, but that ship has sailed. We can build our way out of LA’s cost-of-housing problem, as Caruso has rightfully pointed out, but more housing alone won’t be enough to save Los Angeles, any more than it would have been able to save Detroit after their own respective monopoly [automobiles] crumbled. Beyond rebrands & gimmicks & political rhetoric, the time has come for a complete product refresh, starting with a reimagining of how LA entertains the world. My idea is simple: pivot Los Angeles from the capital of production to the global capital of LIVE entertainment, events, & hospitality. Almost everyone needed in production, and every business downstream of production, has a year-round parallel role to offer in the AI-proof world of LIVE events. Actors can continue to delight audiences, but with a greater emphasis on in-person performances. Production services can become event logistics providers. And for everyone else it will be an all-hands-on-deck effort to ideate & create the new California dream. Outside of the highly protected walls of Disneyland, a few gated communities in Brentwood, and the smoothie bar at Erewhon we’ve earned a bad reputation. The tourist consensus is that LA is dirty, dangerous, & disappointing. New travelers come to LA as a bucket list item, most vowing to never return, which never seemed to bother anyone, perhaps because previously we just didn’t need their business. We need to become the city that people want to date, not take out for a one-night-stand. And that starts by no longer acting like the prom-queen who peaked in high school. We need to collectively clean up & reorganize our entire city from LAX-it’s uber-lot-from-hell all the way to the open air drug markets surrounding our hotels. And I’m sorry if this hurts Mayor Bass’ feelings, but our inability to manage our addiction & mental health crisis should not be the burden of our guests. The easiest place to start is Hollywood, my home of 18 years. 10,000,000 people travel annually to the Hollywood Walk of Fame despite its dubious honor as “the worst tourist trap in the world.” Imagine a walk-of-fame permanently closed to car traffic, protected by security, with an open-carry-beverage farmer’s market, minus the pushy hustlers, that takes over the asphalt, leaving the stars for guided experiences. Why-oh-why do we expect travelers to care about stars from 50 years ago when we refuse to make any effort to give them minimal context? I see an LA that can take the same movie magic that made it the best marketed city on earth, and use it to deliver a travel experience that warrants a 2nd, 3rd & 4th helping. The Olympics & World Cup both present once-in-a-generation opportunities for Los Angeles to reintroduce itself on a global stage. But these tentpole events should be considered the grand re-opening of LA, not the grand finale. Every celebrity on earth should already be living here, assuming they haven’t fled for their family’s own well being after we seemingly abandoned law & order sometime around 2020, so it is easy to imagine around the clock creator driven events led by Gen-Z stars from Mr Beast to Alix Earle, galvanizing their fan bases alongside our own versions of Graceland for names like Cruise, Hepburn, & Kobe. This plan offers a little bit of something for everyone, even our wealth-gap obsessed activist class, as hospitality outcomes are flatter and more egalitarian, something our Hollywood elite at least claim they want. The biggest challenge to making Los Angeles the LIVE entertainment capital of the world will be getting our political leaders to stop sabotaging us with endless red tape, excuses, and kleptocracy. Rampant political corruption has been enabled by LA’s toothless media who, aside from Elex Michaelson & Bill Melugin - both formerly of FoxLA, have been unable to hold our politicians accountable. Reality TV star turned Influencer turned mayoral candidate (as of yesterday) Spencer Pratt has been effective in keeping the media from completely ignoring the victims of the Palisades fire, but LA still considers my former employers - KTLA & the LA TIMES- to be the watchdogs of record. Without mainstream media support I fear our new media warriors won’t be enough to prevent leaders like Gavin Newsom & Karen Bass from continuing to pillage California with a trail of failed programs, despite bottomless budgets, that make Minnesota’s recently unearthed $18 billion fraud scheme seem like, forgive my pun, kiddie stakes. Can someone please light the Bat-Signal for Nick Shirley? Gotham *cough cough* I mean LA needs him. Some might remember in the last mayor's race when Karen Bass said that if we elected Rick Caruso “he’d just turn LA into The Grove!” I believe the Grove’ification of LA is exactly what we need to successfully pivot as a city, and it would ultimately mean cheaper housing, better jobs for everyone, and happier repeat travelers. So to echo Elex Michaelson, who aptly quipped back at Bass, “what’s wrong with that?” But why hasn’t Caruso declared himself in the next mayor’s race? Maybe it’s because he has his sights set on a California gubernatorial run or maybe he just doesn’t want to risk another disheartening defeat. Not even his inner circle knows what he’ll do next. But I do know one thing… Many of the most successful people in the world call California home and we are going to need them if Los Angeles is ever going to make its comeback.

It's important, though, and I accept this, that, you know, I don't support any political party and I've made sure that's been taken down." I've had so many friends, I'm literally talking maybe 20 or 30 in the last few weeks who have phoned me and said, a Times journalist has been phoning and they've been desperately trying, trying to find things about your past." Whether you call it juicy or dirty, and it wasn't gossip, it was a fact. The fact that you claimed that as a hypnotherapist, you could enlarge women's breasts using the power of thought. People are entitled to say, what's this guy really about?" ZP (01:57.2), "People are totally entitled to say that. And that's an important part of politics, that people ask you questions. What I would say is that, you know, this was 13 years ago. It was a Sun journalist's idea. I've apologised for that. They're trying everything in their power to stop us, you said. It's a curious thing to say, isn't it? Ahead of local elections, Green councillors will not have the power to implement any of those policies, will they?" ZP (02:54.8), "Well, I think the relentless attacks on the Green Party in this election, for a local election have partly been about the local election, but really they're about the bigger picture right now. The bigger picture is when I ran to be leader of the Green party, we had 50,000 members, we've now got 225,000 members. So we are rising." ZP (03:11.1), "And I think lots of people are worried about the prospect. And when I say people, people who own, right wing media, multimillionaires and billionaires who are worried about the prospect that they might have to pay a little bit more tax. And so I think it's important that I focus on the vision and the hope and our actual plan." ZP (03:27.4), "I also think it's a complete reality, though we've seen it in the past before with left wing leaders, that there's no secret, there's no love lost between me and the right wing media. And whilst other party leaders and other parties take donations from oil and gas companies or arms trade companies, private healthcare or gambling, Green Party councillors only have two vested interests and Those vested interests. NR (04:21.6), "Well, let's come to that, then, because most interesting, perhaps, is to look at what Greens say who are running for office. You are not. You are a member of the London assembly, you're not a Member of Parliament, you're not running in these elections. Now, you live in Hackney. Hackney happens in northeast London to be a top Green target for taking control from the Labour Party." NR (04:41.9), "So let's look at protecting communities. For example, on crime, the manifesto calls the Metropolitan Police institutionally racist, homophobic, sexist and misogynists. It goes on to say, greens cannot accept this system. Baroness Casey, in the last couple of years, did a review into Metropolitan Police and it was actually the findings that found it institutionally racist and misogynistic. Something that Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, to his credit, accepts. It is noticeable that Mark Rowley, the Commissioner of the Police, doesn't accept that, yet they continue, to work together in that way." ZP (05:31.1), "On the issue of drug harm, we have the highest drug deaths, of any country in Europe. And every single year for the past 13 years, drug deaths have increased. So I think the question anyone has, and we have in Hackney, is that the war on drugs has clearly failed. It's failed in cities right across this country, and more and more people are, often taking dangerous drugs." ZP (05:50.3), "So do we want people to buy them on the black market or on street corners? Or do we want people to go to a pharmacy or a medical health professional where, if they have an addiction to dangerous drugs, we can work with them to take a public health approach based in harm reduction." There Is No Antisemitism Crisis In Australia. It’s A Carefully Constructed Lie. The Murdoch-owned Daily Telegraph has been caught trying to orchestrate what can only be described as a mass media psyop to inflame public hysteria about antisemitism in Australia. In a project internally titled “UNDERCOVERJEW” supposedly designed to show “what it’s like being Jewish in Sydney”, a man wearing a Star of David hat and video glasses went around targeting Muslim and Arab businesses trying to instigate hostility from staff members trailed by a video producer and a Telegraph reporter. The man, who is reportedly associated with the Australian Jewish Association, entered an Egyptian cafe called Cairo Takeaway and postured with his Star of David hat without getting any reaction from anyone. He then started making comments to cafe staff, who caught on to what he was doing and started recording him. Police were then called and it caused a big scandal. It’s obvious that the intention here was to instigate something that could be framed as an “antisemitic incident” and provoke a national outcry and draw all the usual fiery denunciations from Australian officials, followed by arguments citing the incident as evidence that Australia needs even more aggressive speech laws to stomp out all criticism of the genocidal apartheid state of Israel. And it should here be noted that The Daily Telegraph is owned by News Corp, the Murdoch media conglomerate which dominates the Australian press. Rupert Murdoch became the media giant he is with the help of his ties with the Ronald Reagan administration and US government agencies. Also noteworthy is that Murdoch is a board member and significant shareholder of Genie Energy, which holds a contract to drill for oil and gas in the Golan Heights — territory illegally occupied by Israel. This is just the latest in a spate of incidents in which a narrative about an urgent epidemic of antisemitism in Australia is being marketed to the public based on false information. Just today we learned from The Sydney Morning Herald that the Dural caravan laden with explosive materials we were told a couple of weeks ago was intended for use in a “mass casualty event” targeting Jewish sites was not only full of unusable 40 year-old explosives with no detonator, but was involved in a scheme by underworld crime gangs to help negotiate reduced sentences with law enforcement. The entire Australian political-media class lost their minds about this story when it first came out. The words “antisemitic” and “antisemitism” were rife throughout the Australian press. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared that “There’s zero tolerance in Australia for hatred and for antisemitism, and I want any perpetrators to be hunted down and locked up.” The federal government’s special envoy on antisemitism, Jillian Segal, called the incident a “chilling reminder that the same hatred that led to the murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust still exists today”. And it had nothing to do with antisemitism. At all. We saw a similar incident earlier this month when headlines blared about an “antisemitic attack” at Bondi Beach involving eggs being thrown at a group of young women. A couple of days later it came out that the egging was perpetrated by two teenagers getting up to teenage mischief and had nothing to do with anyone hating Jews. Right now we’re seeing an uproar over two Arab Australian nurses who were baited by an Israeli influencer into saying on the website Chatruletka that they would kill Israelis if they came into their hospital. The comments by the nurses were obviously extremely ill-advised and unethical, but a police investigation has so far found that they’ve never harmed anybody, and if you watch the extended footage of the exchange it’s clear the influencer went out of his way to inform them that he served in the Israeli military and killed Palestinians. One of the nurses has reportedly lost 70 family members to Israeli atrocities in Palestine. Without defending the irresponsible comments of the nurses, I don’t think anyone would expect a Jewish person who came in contact with a Nazi soldier in the 1940s to maintain their cool and avoid violent speech, much less so if that person had lost family members in the Holocaust, and even less if they believed they were having a conversation in private. These chat roulette sites are not intended as mass public broadcast forums; people participating in them tend to interact on the assumption that they are having a private conversation, so the exchange should be viewed as angry words being hurled at a perceived abuser, not as a public declaration of intent to harm others. I don’t condone a healthcare provider saying she’d kill Israeli nationals in her hospital, even if she has lost scores of family members in the Gaza holocaust. But I also wouldn’t confuse what I was seeing with evidence of an antisemitism crisis in Australia. There is a concerted effort to manufacture the illusion of an antisemitism crisis in Australia in order to protect Israeli information interests — and the call isn’t coming entirely from inside the house. Albanese has acknowledged that the perpetrators of a spate of allegedly antisemitic attacks in this country may have been paid actors working for foreign operatives. And some of these so-called “antisemitic” incidents are so obviously staged it hurts. When you see graffiti on a synagogue with “Free Palestine” written next to swastikas, it calls to mind the Mississippi man who notoriously claimed in 2015 that his driveway had been vandalized by black activists with graffiti that said “BLACKS RULE”. Apparently we’re all supposed to take very seriously the idea that either (A) Nazis are spray painting the words “Free Palestine” next to their swastikas, or (B) that supporters of Palestinian rights are spray painting Nazi symbols next to their pro-Palestinian slogans. And we are never meant to consider the possibility that this incident was staged by Israel’s supporters or by paid actors working for foreign Zionists. It is always okay to express skepticism about dubious incidents of “antisemitism” in today’s political environment. Israel’s supporters are shitty, evil people who support genocide, and faking antisemitic incidents is a standard hasbara tactic with a well-documented history. The Anti-Defamation League recently drew controversy by saying that Elon Musk’s infamous Nazi salute was not antisemitic, while we’re on the subject. There is no antisemitism crisis in Australia.
