Of course, the previous and only time Spain reached the World Cup Final before this year was in 2010. Martin Tyler had the call for that match on ESPN & it remains his only U.S. World Cup Final assignment. Here he was on the call for Spain’s winning goal...

That match averaged 24.700 million viewers in the United States — the most-watched World Cup Final ever at the time. It now ranks as the third most-watched Men’s World Cup in the U.S. — trailing 2014 and 2022.

Ian Darke is and was the only reason it was his only WC with ESPN. Tyler had to dip and go back to broadcast for the UK when he saw that Darke was that dude and didn't want to play second fiddle.

Martin is calling matches, for this World Cup,for the FIFA world feed. We pick up his telecasts through the TSN coverage of the tournament.

A foul started Spain’s counter attack and the goal should’ve never stood.

And for good reason, too. Tyler was ass, is ass, and will always be ass.

I think I'd like him on the 'world feed' this coming Sunday (we have that option with DAZN in Spain), although his voice has lost a bit of energy, though to be fair he's into his 80s now.

He commentated on the 1982 final for ITV in the UK. Controversially dropped for the 1986 final having been the lead. Presenter/commentator Brian Moore was flown out to do it which caused a rift!

Worst World Cup final I’ve ever seen, and that includes the 2006 final which was almost equally mind numbing.

So ESPN brought him in just for the Final instead of having Ian Darke do it?
