Offset (slant step) progression. Moving the front is a tremendous weapon. I am a believer in the lateral-to-vertical approach (as opposed to 45°) approach… and these are the three most fundamental drills I use to begin progression to mastery.

Like the club> rip?

Way I teach, every move used to pass blocker is followed by rip. In event player isn’t ripping off the club, it would simply be me correcting them saying, “finish with rip” while working this same drill (as opposed to a new drill)

I like the second step a little shorter. Feel it helps when getting washed

To me… that’s not the look we working here. This is beating a base block clean with the initial lateral movement then getting vertical through the gap. IMO the offset step must first and foremost be a base block killer.

Do you differentiate the footwork based on the location of the RB (and therefore the expected direction of the run)?

No… if we are speaking from a DC standpoint, the location of the back might simply be a tell for where I want to send the slant. For example, I would want to slant TO the back vs. a heavy zone team (remember, offset step, in my opinion, must be a base block killer).
