Often, I debate Sid Meier's masterpiece: Pirates, Civilization, Colonization, Railroad Tycoon... or Alpha Centauri. All are great, but Alpha Centauri wins it for me. Alpha Centauri (1999), by Sid Meier's Firaxis, is a groundbreaking 4X strategy masterpiece and Civilization's spiritual successor. Players lead one of seven ideological factions that... show more

Some lines hit a bit harder these days.

Brave new world...

Loved the atmosphere in that game, especially the wonder videos. Baraka clips were pretty cool. SMAC and Civ 2 had the best atmosphere. Civ 2's Elvis advisor still hasn't been topped to this day.

Agreed. Mid late game was pure game orgasm; Nuclear weapons, defense satellites, PBX armed copters, PSi attacks. All customizable not the silly Spearman vs Jet civilization nonsense. I think in 4X ,Alpha Centauri is the GOAT

Love these nostalgic trips! A game with a special place in my heart is Sid Meier’s SimGolf. It was such a cozy little sandbox I spent many hours trying to build the perfect golf course.

Totally forgot about this one... nice memories, thx for sharing!

Thx to you too. Spent many hours today in SimCity 3000!

Please dont go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

Funny, I was playing it tonight just before I saw this post.

Also... I was thinking... "Anders Sandberg"—why does that name ring a bell? And voilà, thanks to Wiki, I now feel both foolish for not recognizing it faster and yet honoured to see you drop by. Quite the rollercoaster. Didn't think you'd be an old-school gamer!

Well, I am an old-school gamer of *one* game! (and actually not really of any newer games; there I enjoy watching friends and family play.)

Then you are a VERY rare species. But if I had to pick one game I would certainly put Alpha Centauri in the short list (ultimately I still go with Civilization, which you would have liked too, I am certain). Now, I leave you to do more important things than talking to a dude who posts stuff about retro games. I still can't believe some who has a PhD in computational neuroscience decents from the lofty heights of solving world problems to talk about a 26 year old game. Love it though! Made my day!

The trick to function at lofty heights is to descend for air regularly. Civ 1 and 2 were indeed great (and I played them a lot), These games are not just games, but philosophizing about the nature of history and society through their mechanics.

Alpha Centauri is a game I would LOVE to have a remaster of -- not a reboot or a "new version", just lightly bring the resolution up to modern standards.

Plus the nukes were by far the best in the franchise. None if this slightly poisoning an area nonsense: we got big honkin' craters

This was an outstanding game in which the ideologies of the different factions really provided them with unique flavors and gameplay.

Alpha Centauri is one of those titles I’m surprised hasn’t found a reboot. It was so damn good.

Alpha Centauri had wonderful world building, the factions were all unique and fun to play, and the quotes and movies for technologies and wonders were amazing

For I Have Tasted The Fruit!

It is a masterpiece and it has aged very well.

A timeless game, like a fine wine aging gracefully ❤️

For me, this game got a little lost in the weeds. It had too many details and systems for its own good, losing that magnificent balance between playability and depth that Sid Meier seems to find for his games, and that the best Civ games share, designed by Sid or not.

Fair point, I see why you get to that conclusion ❤️🫶

@Count_Dreg It would have thrived today in the YouTube era, as streamers would have made the best metas accessible to all. Everything Sid Meier made has already Stood The Test of Time ...

@exquizitely It's definitely a great game.

Alien Crossfire is amazing... Except it won't let you play all 14 faction...

Civilization was great until they deleted the stack of doom. It created huge problems for the AI. Also, it is unrealistic not to able to have dozens of units in a single square. From Civ V onwards, it's being worse. Civ 4, the best one.

loved alpha centauri

It feels timeless. I still load it up sometimes these days. Nostalgia hits hard!

Colonization wins it for me. I still play it. Simple but yet somewhat complicated. Keep your close friends happy so they don't attack you when you have built a great empire, one attack without defence can end it all. Love Pirates also, still play it too. I'm 50 years old.

Exactly the same age here, cheers! 🙏😂

Some of the best cutscenes and wacky philosophies. I played this a lot as a teen.

I did localization testing on this game at EA so we played it a LOT. Including multiplayer which was creaky but a lot of fun!

Careful when you mention EA around here, lots of old school retro gamers around who have PTSD from EA acquisitions of former studios... JK

Did games like this stop getting made, or did that just mark the end of gaming for me?

The legends are true: someone liked Alpha Centauri 😶

I bought this game when I was just 10. Didn't understand anything. Remembered combine tank with a soldier and kill some worm alien is the most progress I can do. When I found another human team I thought they came for help.

Plus, it has the best good ending for a strategy game I've ever seen. I compare every other ending to Ascent to Transcendence.

At the time, Alpha Centauri scored 98% in PC Gamer magazine. That was the highest score that had ever been issued.

Loved civ2, but alpha centauri was the pinnacle

"Civilization is the best Sid Myers game" We must dissent.

I've always wanted it ported to a modern engine so the multiplayer was more user friendly, but it never came about. Civ-4's version of Colonization was great, I just couldn't get anyone to play it with me. Something about, GD Indians. They were right, they were just as bad.😆

The quotes when you unlocked new tech still stay with me. This site is still going since then with them all:

Ah yes, the Brian Reynolds era. Greatness!

Yes, i agree it is a Masterpiece, but in hours played it didnt beat Civ for me. Masters of Orion was main hours(🤣🫠months) of lifetime spent

I know it feels a tad bit dated and clunky but I overlook that easily because of the nostalgic and emotional connection I have with it ❤️

Would love to see Pirates redone and modernized, but keeping most of the original gameplay etc

Still play it sometimes when i want to feel nostaligic!

You knew how good it was when you realized how bad Beyond Earth was in comparison.
