Times Square confetti is always thrown by live people who live in the area and volunteer. The guy who runs the program refused to automate it, saying that it wouldn't be the same.

I feel like there has to be a more eco friendly way

I have a friend who does this on Times Square. Has a special laminate she wears like staff. I remember passing through Times Square at the 1999/2000 big event. Coming from a party at 3 am. People were still there who wanted to watch ALL the time zones, I guess Hawaii being last— the confetti was still on the ground and up to my knees at places. Like walking through snow after a mega storm. I was on my bike and had to dismount and walk it through. Good times.

Most of these people commenting have clearly never seen Times Square right after the ball drops. They clean that place up insanely fast once the crowd thins out.
