I love Kermode. Love, love, love. His audiobooks and rants are entertaining as anything, his passion for what he loves is inspirational and I usually share a lot of his opinions. But I have a feeling I'm not going to take The Doctor's advice on Eyes Wide Shut...

I love Kermode. But man... He can get it wrong sometimes. He recently gave Resident Evil rave reviews. A film that's flimsy and won't age well. Eyes Wide Shut aged like fine wine.

Don’t agree about Eyes Wide Shut but his description of cult films is spot on. Another example would be the Miami Vice movie from Michael Mann, which is shit no matter how you try to turn it

I find someone voicing their opinion in a way that doesn’t inherently shoot down people with a differing opinion quite refreshing. It’s no secret that Eyes Wide Shut was hardly a critical darling and gained its audience moreso with people that came after it. Excited for digger.

I went to see EWS when it came out. I thought it was brilliant then and I think the same now. Gave up on Kermode decades ago. He loves the aesthetic of the rebel (see the strategically positioned album covers), but he’s establishment through and through.

He’s spot on about Eyes Wide Shut. I think people desperately want to like it and find some deeper meaning behind it because it’s Kubrick when the reality is that it is pretentious and incredibly boring. He was an incredible film maker but this was a misfire.

Why do you as an Australian care about Mark Kermode this much, and what his take on Digger is? Don’t you guys have your own movie critic podcast guys to be upset at for also not liking Digger?

Lame kickback , because someone older than you has an opinion you disagree with. That’s just life. Dont make him wrong. I’ve not seen any decent positive reviews for the movie yet myself and i’ve been reading a lot.

I mean he’s had the same opinion for 30 years. So you might disagree but doesn’t mean he’s out of touch

Kermode, like Kael, thinks first thought is best thought. His 1999 opinion on EWS, his Exorcist hyperfixation, the recycling of anecotes and idioms...He is not a man who easily changes his mind.

if a movie stands the test of time and still generates conversations decades later then it's a good film. period. the only bad film is a boring & anodyne one. a lot of movies that get praised nowadays will not stand the test of time cuz they're too safe,sometimes aggressively so

I can see why he’d find it preposterous that disliking Eyes Wide Shut was “edgy”, because at the time, disliking Eyes Wide Shut was consensus. So he definitely doesn’t dislike it just to be contrarian. But beyond that he is still wrong about the movie, just like most people were.

I watched Eyes Wide Shut two nights ago. Apart from Kidman’s dodgy, cringy acting, it’s a fantastic film.

The only reason he doesn’t like eyes wide shut is because the doctor’s wife in the film wanted to cheat on the husband so that hurt his ego so he doesn’t think it’s a good film. He has a history of this thinking
