That's very interesting. Please post more developments on that as they occur. I am an American living in Nagoya because my wife wanted to take care of her mom who is 95 and I am retired. My wife says crime against women by US service personnel has been an issue in Okinawa. I don't like that and am generally against foreigners who disrespect Japanese customs and values. On the other hand, military security is an issue. I am curious to see what Okinawans themselves will decide.

This is kind of typical for Japanese not living on Okinawa and feeling the brunt of soldiers' behavior. Drunk driving, PFAS leakage, and sexual harassment. While most behave, it is the ones who don't that stick out. @randomyoko never have to deal with that in Fukuoka.
