D-Line Press to Scoop Drill - The press to scoop drill is designed for defensive linemen to handle situations where they encounter a double team combo or a zone block. - When positioned on the backside of a play, the player must work to press the scoop as flat as possible against the line of scrimmage. - It is critical to get hands on the offensive player to prevent them from getting a free release to the second level of the defense. - Players are coached to keep their inside arm long, strong, and fully locked out while adjusting their position during the play. - To maintain power and leverage, the defensive lineman should work to get their inside leg up, utilizing a same hand and same foot technique. - If two blockers remain on the defensive lineman, another defender is free; once one blocker leaves, the lineman must be prepared to come off the block and make the play. Step on DL outside foot. - Eyes look right through DL ear hole - Aiming point for hands = Split Hand Double Punch. One hand on DL pec, other hand underneath the arm pit. Aim for the underneath arm pit because if you miss you still get inside. Underneath arm pit gives you more control of the defender. - "In the run game, you don't move people with your hands, you move them with your feet. Your feet block the defender, your hands guide them." - "You do not want extension. You want to keep the DL as close as possible. Pick your favorite player in the NFL, watch his pancakes/knockdowns. How many of those knockdowns are with their arms/hands extended, probably none of them."

One strategy to avoid this is “Copenhagens”. NBA players do these for injury prevention, improving stability and balance. Great to do at home and uses the lateral flexion movement pattern of your spine. Too hard? Rest your knee instead of foot on the bench. Too easy? Bend your off-knee and perform them weighted with a plate. Execution: 1. Support your bodyweight on your elbow (should be directly under your shoulder). 2. Place the inside of your foot on a bench. 3. Lift your hip off the floor by pushing your foot down onto the bench.
