A Church of England primary school in Lincolnshire is facing serious backlash after children as young as seven were asked to take part in Islamic prayer movements during a Religious Education lesson. For many parents, this raises real concerns. There’s a clear difference between teaching children about different religions and asking them to physically take part in religious practices. Education should inform not cross the line into participation. This is a Christian country with a long-standing cultural and religious heritage, and many are now questioning whether that identity is being respected within the school system. Parents send their children to school expecting them to learn, not to be placed in situations that may conflict with their own beliefs or values. it’s about boundaries, respect, and choice. Children, especially at such a young age, should not feel pressured to take part in any form of religious practice that they or their families may not agree with. Where do we draw the line? Boebert: The separation of church and state is not in the Constitution. We are a Christian nation James Talarico: America is not a Christian nation. It is a nation where you are free to be a Christian — or any other faith, or no faith at all. The religious right would probably call the Founding Fathers ‘not real Christians’ given their beliefs. I think it's important that we remember our true history and we honor that that promise of America as a melting pot — E pluribus unum, out of many one. It's a promise we obviously haven't ever fulfilled, but it is one that we're still trying to fulfill.
