We recall his infectious energy, his characteristic warmth and his signature catchphrases – from the rallying call of “Harambee!” to his spirited shouts of “Omake!” that brought crowds to their feet. President Geingob once said: "August is a year, very important year. I was born in that year, many other people who are very important are born in that year." Hage Geingob would have been 85 years old on 3 August.

I never wanted Gracie Mansion to feel exclusive. I wanted it to feel like home. Not my home, but New York’s home. That meant opening the doors to communities that for too long felt unseen by City Hall. Opening its doors to communities that too often felt overlooked was deeply important to me. Every New Yorker deserves to know that they matter, that they belong, and that City Hall sees them. The Puerto Rican community has given so much to this city, and I was proud to honor that legacy each year by hosting the annual Puerto Rican reception at Gracie Mansion. Those evenings were about more than a celebration. They were about recognizing a community whose story is inseparable from the story of New York City.

It was May 10, 2023, when this old man who had traveled to support Manchester City in their first leg against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu had to leave early because of arthritis (he had a broken foot for three years). He was taking thirty pills a day and was in great pain. The reporter told him that KDB had equalized was in disbelief. We won the treble in the month that followed. I hope he’s still alive and that Manchester City did something to help him.
