🇷🇺🇷🇸 Russia's EMERCOM Il-76 begins firefighting operations in Serbia On August 20, a Russia's EMERCOM (Ministry of Emergency Situations) Il-76 aircraft made its first drop (42 tonnes of water) over the Deliblatska Peščara nature reserve in northeastern Serbia, the epicenter of the country's wildfire crisis. The reserve's fire has burned over 3,500 hectares, the largest of roughly 32 fires currently active across Serbia. The Il-76 was dispatched to Niš on President Putin's personal order after Serbia formally requested assistance amid a critical worsening of the fire situation threatening populated areas. A case of “get there itis” August 23 2005: TANS Perú Flight 204, a B-737, crashes in Pucallpa (Peru), 40 of 98 aboard die. On approach, the jet impacted swamplands in a CFIT, 3.8 mi from the runway. Report pointed to pilot actions, namely the decision to proceed with the landing attempt in poor weather, stating it was safer to divert. Inquiry noted that the crew failed to follow SOP in adverse weather. The captain assumed control of the aircraft, but the trainee pilot did not immediately monitor the instruments, leaving the crew unaware of the rapid descent during the critical seconds when the accident might have been avoided. This video was sent to me from the Beaver River below the Cottonwood Fire burn scar. While the flooding itself isn’t too severe here, notice how black the water is. That’s ash, soot, sediment, and debris being washed off the burned landscape and into the river. It’s a good reminder that the impacts of a major wildfire don’t end when the flames are extinguished. Burn scars dramatically increase runoff because the scorched ground can’t absorb water as efficiently. Even a relatively brief thunderstorm can send muddy water, rocks, and debris racing downstream. With an active monsoon pattern expected over the next several days, the flood threat could increase not only around the Cottonwood Fire burn scar but across other recent wildfire burn scars in Utah as well. It doesn’t take a widespread rain event—just one slow-moving thunderstorm over the right location can trigger dangerous flash flooding. If you’re camping, hiking, or recreating near burn scars, keep a close eye on the forecast and be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if storms develop.

COMSPOC sensor data and orbit determination show a familiar profile: departure burns on 3–4 July broke USA 325 out of the 97.9°E slot into a ~3.1°/day eastward drift. Three weeks of unpowered coasting later, several maneuvers between 23 July and 8 August braked the drift near 169°E and walked it into TJS-23's neighborhood at 175.5°E. TJS-23 launched on a CZ-5 from Wenchang in December 2025 and has held 175.5°E ± 0.2° ever since reaching GEO. Officially a communication technology test satellite, it is widely assessed as a SIGINT mission and the slot fits: the footprint from 175.5°E covers the Western and Central Pacific, including major U.S. test ranges and operating areas.
