There are only roughly 100 Palestinian fishers in Gaza today. In 2000, there were about 10,000. Israel has intentionally targeted fishers in a calculated effort to destroy Palestinian means of subsistence, self-reliance, and livelihood. Through Israel's naval violence, genocidal campaign, severe movement restrictions, and the systematic shrinking of fishing zones, the fishing community in Gaza has been pushed to the brink. Despite it all, fishing remains "... an integral part of Palestinian history and culture, and the motif of a fishing net can be found on the keffiyeh. Fishing is our heritage, our culture, and a vital means of subsistence.”
