WE REMEMBER June 16,1944 *George Junius Stinney Jr. was the youngest person to be sentenced to death in the 20th century in the United States.* He was only 14 years old when he was executed in an electric chair.* During his trial, even on the day of his execution, he always carried a bible in his hands, claiming to be innocent. He was accused of killing two white girls, 11-Year-old Betty, and Mary of 7, the bodies were found near the house where the teenager resided with his parents. At that time, all members of the jury were white. The trial lasted only 2 hours, and the sentence was dictated 10 minutes later. The Boy's parents were threatened, and prevented from being present in the courtroom, and subsequently expelled from that city. Before the execution, George spent 81 days in prison without being able to see his parents. He was held in solitary, 80 miles from his city. He was alone without the presence of his parents or a lawyer. He was electrocuted with 5,380 volts in his head, imagine all that voltage in a teenager's head. *70 years later, his innocence was finally proven by a judge in South Carolina. In 2015 Joaquín Guzmán known globally as El Chapo performed a feat of engineering that stunned the Mexican government. While held in the Altiplano maximum security prison he vanished from his cell in the middle of the night. The exit point was a small opening in the floor of his private shower stall which was the only area of the cell not visible to security cameras. Below the shower was a tunnel over one mile long that led to an abandoned construction site. This was not a crude hole in the ground. It was a sophisticated passage complete with lighting and a ventilation system using PVC pipes. To move the earth quickly and later transport the prisoner the engineers installed a modified motorcycle on a rail system. This custom bike allowed the escape team to ferry tools in and Guzmán out in a matter of minutes. The operation cost an estimated fifty million dollars and required a massive team of workers to dig and remove tons of soil without being noticed by prison guards. Guzmán remained free for six months before he was eventually recaptured in a military raid.

Former Mid-State Correctional Facility guard Jonah Levi was one of the guards who beat inmate Messiah Nantwi to death. Nantwi was hit 69 times with batons, feet, and fists. Levi was accused of stomping on the 22-year-old's head, who later died at the hospital. "I think the real you was shown to me in the body-worn camera," Judge Michael Nolan said during sentencing. "You were fist-bumping other officers, laughing and joking while Mr. Nantwi lay on the floor, dying in the infirmary because of the things you and those other officers did." All the other guards pleaded guilty in plea deals. Levi was hit with the maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision. He was one of Kenya’s leading socialist voices and, in the spirit of internationalism, developed a brotherly relationship with the revolutionary activist Malcom X. In this clip, Dick Gregory, a Black writer, activist and social critic, explains their close bond that was first formed during Malcolm X's 1959 visit to Kenya. Pio Gama Pinto, a Kenyan revolutionary of Asian origin, was deeply involved in Kenya’s struggle for independence. Both he and X were fighting similar fights against oppression but on different sides of the Atlantic. Together, they planned a joint strategy to combat injustices. Notably, Pinto advocated taking the US to the UN for its treatment of Black people. Both voices posed a danger to the status quo and were tragically killed within three days of each other. Pinto’s killing, on 24 February 1965, was Kenya’s first political assassination. An accomplished journalist and propagandist, Pinto used his skills to publicise the cause of African freedom through political pamphlets and press articles. When the colonial government declared a state of emergency in 1952 and detained most African leaders, he was involved in funnelling weapons to Mau Mau resistance fighters. Pinto had to die because he was perhaps the perfect African socialist in a Kenya whose independence was hijacked by capitalist elites. He was virtually at war with those accused of land-grabbing - including Kenya’s first President Jomo Kenyatta and his ‘Kiambu mafia’ (a group of the elite from Kenya's Central province) - and with Western capitalism led by the US and British governments. Pinto was shot as he drove out of his Westlands home in Nairobi. Though departed, his legacy lives on in the millions of Africans keeping up the fight for a fully liberated and dignified Africa. In 2011, Seath Jackson, a 15-year-old boy, was tragically killed in a brutal ambush. He was lured to a house by his ex-girlfriend, where he was viciously attacked and shot multiple times. Despite being shot in the head, Seath made a desperate attempt to escape the property, according to police reports. However, Seath was shot again and his body was forced into a bathtub.
