Bonta is leading the multi-state lawsuit with 21 other Democratic attorneys general. The suit asks a court to block Dept. of Agriculture’s guidance Bonta says is incorrectly and illegally restricting SNAP food benefits for certain groups of lawful noncitizens, including permanent legal residents who were granted asylum, admitted into the country as refugees, or as humanitarian parolees. “California will not stand by while families lose access to food,” said Bonta. A USDA spokesperson issued the following statement: “We will not comment on pending litigation. For further information, please contact the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs.”
