During the cordial meeting, both leaders discussed the importance of peace, compassion, and inter-faith harmony in today’s world. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, visiting Kashmir after seven years, expressed happiness at being back in the Valley and lauded its spiritual and cultural heritage as a symbol of coexistence. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed him and reiterated that the institution of the Mirwaiz remains committed to peace and dialogue as the most humane and effective means of addressing issues and resolving differences.Both leaders agreed that injustice and disempowerment lead to radicalisation that threatens peace. Mirwaiz also appreciated Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s recent anti-drug outreach in the Valley. The SGPC has issued a farman stating that Ravidas Ji should be called Bhagat and not Guru. I fully agree. We respect and revere Bhagat Ravidas Ji, and his bani is part of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, but he was not a Guru. It’s really that simple. No need to politicize this.

Many people claim that Guru Gobind Singh Ji worshipped Naina Devi, but there is no truth in that. Guru Gobind Singh Ji actually wanted to test the Pandits. The Pandits used to that they could manifest the Devi (goddess). To dispel their illusion, Guru Ji ordered the Samgari (materials) for a Havan (sacred fire ritual) and had Pandit Kesho Das begin the ceremony. After 2-3 months had passed, Pandit Kesho Das declared that the Devi was about to appear and that Guru Ji would need to sacrifice someone very dear to him. Guru Ji replied, “Pandit Ji, who could be dearer to us than you?” Upon hearing this, Pandit Kesho Das after some fled from the place. Guru Ji then poured all the remaining Havan Smagari into the Hawan Kund. After that, Guru Ji returned, raised his Kirapan (sword) in his hand, and declared: “This is the Devi. This is Chandi, who protects us from the enemy.”
