Iranians are using grief and mourning as acts of defiance against the regime. Forty days from the death of a loved one marks the end of the traditional mourning period in Persian culture, and this week, families across Iran have been marking the end of that period. Between January 8-10, regime forces are believed to have killed thousands and possibly tens of thousands of people who took part in the anti-government protests. And now, their families are rejecting the somber customs they associate with the regime and are instead expressing grief on their own terms.
