On This Day 1966 England crowned World Champions, with commentator Ken Wolstenholme giving us one iconic piece of commentary. #England #WorldCup

Great how they went straight up to get the trophy. No 15-minute wait for a stage to be built, and then the losers to get their medals first.

211 fifa nations and still only 8 ever won. Its a very exclusive club. But for England fans frustrated with 60 years of hurt don't forget all the recent trophy lifts for our other England sides- lionesses and mens under 21s!

If it doesn't say "they think it's all over. It is now" on his headstone then something's wrong. Iconic commentary.

It was all so understated too wasn't it. Look at the players going up to get the trophy, almost like they were about to get the bus to Maida Vale.

@3Retro_Football Great from Bobby to chest it down in the box, compose himself and ping a perfect ball to Geoff ⚒

@Pjohnnners So Iconic 👏👏👏

As an 8 year old I was captivated by this world cup, class players led by a class captain and no singing after beating Mexico in a group game, sadly world cups will never be the same and players will not be cutting their lawns after a final.

Bobby's pass to Sir Geoff...... awesome ⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴

Totally iconic.

Was 1966 the first World Cup when slow motion replays etc were used?

Did England win the World Cup in 1966?? Didn't know that😲They should talk about it more

have they ever found out who the "people on the pitch" were?

That pass from Bobby Moore to Geoff Hurst..............How many players in history wouldn't have just hoofed it out of play at that stage and how many centre backs in history would have had the vision to do that?

I’m convinced that all modern commentators are consciously chasing their “think it’s all over” moment.

When was that? You'd think someone would have mentioned it before.

Cheaters!!

Brilliant! I remember it well! I believe Mr Wolstenholme has that on his gravestone. Top man! Most modern 'commentators' could learn a lot from him.

First time I’ve noticed that Bobby Moore had no captains armband. Wonder when that became a thing?

I so want to see England win the World Cup again

Wolstenholm responsible for so many iconic commentaries. 1966 World Cup final. 1967 European cup final. 1968 European cup final. “Sheer delightful football…” 1970 World Cup final. Underestimated commentator.

If only AI was there back then.. England we're fucked
