On this day in 2004, Boeing officially launched the 7E7 program—later known as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner—with a historic order from All Nippon Airways (ANA). At the time, this 50-plane commitment was the largest launch order in Boeing's history. Video shows the delivery flight.

WHY THE BOEING 787-10 IS THE LEAST POPULAR DREAMLINER VARIANT Despite being the largest member of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family, the 787-10 accounts for just under 11% of total orders, far behind the 787-8 and 787-9. According to Boeing data, the 787-10 carries the most passengers (336) but has the shortest range at 6,330 nautical miles, compared with 7,305 nmi for the 787-8 and 7,565 nmi for the 787-9. To reduce development costs, Boeing retained the same 60-meter wing and landing gear as the smaller variants. However, the much longer fuselage (68 m vs. 63 m on the -9 and 57 m on the -8) results in less fuel capacity relative to its size, limiting long-haul range. This positions the 787-10 in a narrow market segment and in direct competition with aircraft like the Airbus A350-900, while the more versatile 787-9 continues to dominate Dreamliner orders. Boeing is now exploring MTOW increases and structural improvements that could add roughly 500 nautical miles of range, potentially improving the aircraft’s competitiveness.

Just days after receiving its third Dreamliner, the new Saudi Arabian carrier brought forward its inaugural service from July 1 to June 10, 2026. Initially, tickets were available to staff only, and the flights were used to familiarise the crew with the aircraft. Later, some tickets were also made available to other customers, but on a limited basis only through approved travel partners.

Crewed by test pilots John Cashman and Kenny Higgins, the aircraft remained airborne for three hours and forty-eight minutes, marking the longest first flight in Boeing's history at the time. The successful evaluation included critical systems testing, such as an in-flight engine shutdown and restart. The 777 represented a paradigm shift in aviation manufacturing as the first commercial airliner designed entirely using 3D digital software. Additionally, Boeing pioneered a collaborative development approach by involving eight major global airlines—including United Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific—throughout the design process. This innovative development strategy proved highly successful. The Boeing 777 became the world's largest twinjet and one of the most successful widebody aircraft in aviation history, entering commercial service with United Airlines in 1995. The original prototype (line number WA001) has since been retired and is preserved at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona.
