Ykw, you don't cut the name and that very well may be endearment in a scarcity mindset rooted in some generational trauma. It's actually very likely the more I think about it. We didn't have much at one point in history so having your name on the cake at the end was special.

I think because the others are often innately selfish so they see no problem cutting up the cake however cause “who cares”. Meanwhile US want to make it special and leave the name/photo for the bday person and give them the 1st/best piece. We just are different thankfully🥹.

1. My name was never on a cake. 2. I know the rule, but because our cakes were usually home made in the shape of things (football fields, Pink panther, cookie monster) we didn't have to worry about not cutting the name. 3. The same rule about names applies to roses too.

Im Puerto Rican, my rules at my house are the birthday girl or boy cuts their first piece containing their name and or number they're turning plus the piece the candle was in containing their wish!!!! they eat a bite then I can start cutting pieces to be passed around.
