Imagine a world without elephants. Imagine forests without them. They would never be as rich, resilient and alive as they are when elephants roam through them as ecosystem engineers ! India is so lucky to have elephants. The latest Wildlife Institute of India DNA-based assessment estimates 22,446 wild elephants in India, meaning India is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining wild Asian elephants. Within India, the Western Ghats are the great elephant stronghold. Karnataka (6,013), Tamil Nadu (3,136) and Kerala (2,785) together have 11,934 elephants, more than 53% of India’s entire estimated population. Tamil Nadu has the third-highest elephant population in the country, after Karnataka and Assam. India’s top five elephant states are: Karnataka 6,013 | Assam 4,159 | Tamil Nadu 3,136 | Kerala 2,785 | Uttarakhand 1,792. Together they account for nearly 80% of India’s elephants. The lifespan of an elephant mirrors our own. As we nurture the orphans of today, we are working on the bigger picture — securing entire landscapes, safeguarding wild lives, and tackling root threats like poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict — to secure a future for all elephants. To date, we have rescued over 300 orphaned elephants and welcomed 77 wild grandbabies of our Orphans' Project. Raising an orphaned elephant is a lot like raising a human child — it requires love, leadership, and the commitment of a lifetime. We make the same promise to every elephant we rescue: To nurture them through their infancy, giving them the confidence and competence to ultimately reclaim their place in the wild. But even after they have grown up and established their independent lives, our orphans continue to return 'home' to the people who raised them. They come back to us in times of trouble — seeking help for an injury or even bringing back wild friends in need. They also return in times of celebration — nearly every ex-orphan mum has chosen to introduce us to her wild offspring. Family is everything to elephants. It's everything to us, too: Our founder, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, was the first person in the world to successfully raise infant orphaned African elephants. Today, her legacy continues through both her own family, who proudly build upon the conservation foundations she laid, and the generations of orphaned elephants charting their own history in the wilds of Kenya. Zero deaths. That is the mission. A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife. The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements. No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better.
