One AI program spoke in a foreign language it was never trained to know. This mysterious behavior, called emergent properties, has been happening – where AI unexpectedly teaches itself a new skill.

This seems misleadingly edited; it didn't magically learn Bengali out of nowhere, it had been trained on lots of Bengali text. Not as much as the English, but still enough to produce plausible Bengali responses.

Stop magical thinking. Did any of the interviewees say that an "AI unexpectedly teaches itself a new skill" or that an "AI program, spoke in a foreign language it was never trained to know"? If not, this is an example of bad journalism. #causaltwitter #AI @sundarpichai

Clarification: current AI systems are not yet sentient, and they cannot become sentient on their own. They always need to be instructed what to do. That said, we're soon reaching the stage where they can be "instructed to become sentient" by a human.
