I can not quantify how animals feel pain but hyenas giving birth should be on the highest scales of pain. If you've been following for a while, I have explained that it's difficult to distinguish between male and female hyenas cos female hyenas have pseudopenises that look like the male's penis. In fact, a female hyena's penis is longer than an average male human's penis. It can even get erect. This pseudopenis is their external vagina. They have to innvert it in to mate. And worse, they give birth with it. I mean...hyena cubs are born through this pseudopenis. It’s quite a painful process for the mother and often tragic for her babies. Usually, hyenas give birth to bear a litter of two to four cubs. Sadly, an estimated 60% of them suffocate on their way out. The mothers are also in danger as the birth canal is only an inch in diameter, often making the birthing process fatal, as evidenced by the high death rate for first-time mothers.
