Karma has different definitions in Hindu and Buddhist teachings. And I’d venture to argue western society has a distinct co-opted definition too

Thank you @Padmaja_Yatra, I found this explanation of how karma works really helpful. However, one crucial point the video doesn’t mention is that what lies at the very root of the way we think, desire, act, choose, speak, and react — all of which do indeed shape our lives — is the kind of knowledge we have. More specifically, the knowledge of who we actually are at the deepest level, and how we are connected with God. If a person thinks they are nothing more than the body and mind, does not recognise their eternal relationship with God, and acts independently of that relationship, they will still remain entangled in karma — even if it may be so-called “good karma.” So the first and most fundamental thing to understand is that you are not the temporary body or mind. You are an eternal conscious ātmā (soul), and the source of that ātmā is God. The Bhagavad-gītā gives this knowledge of our true identity and our relationship with God, as well as of how we should think, desire, act, choose, speak, and react in a way that is aligned with God’s desire for our highest benefit. Spoken by Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Gītā is unique among scriptures in the systematic way it explains these five primary topics: 1. Īśvara (God) 2. Jīva (the individual ātmā / soul) 3. Kāla (time) 4. Prakṛti (material nature) 5. Karma (action and its results) Here’s a clip from a longer video I made of Satyanarayana Dasa Babaji speaking about the knowledge the Bhagavad-gītā gives us, and why that knowledge is the first link in the causal chain: Whether our knowledge is wrong or correct shapes what we desire; what we desire shapes what we decide and the actions we perform; and this, in turn, becomes the quality of our life — either miserable or happy. Babaji is speaking in Hindi here, while someone else gives a simultaneous English translation. I’ll post the full video just below this.
