He skips 1:21, the hinge verse in its own paragraph. “It pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe” (tous pisteuontas). Paul states his mechanism plainly: preaching plus believing. So the “called” (klētoi) of verse 24 are not a secret subset receiving an inner irresistible jolt. They are the believing ones of verse 21. Paul uses the same word group in 1:1-2, 1:9, and all through chapter 7, where klēsis simply means the summons and the situation you were in when it came. And 2 Thessalonians 2:14 nails it: “He called you by our gospel.” The call comes through the message, not around it. The stumbling block is offense, not incapacity. Jews demanding signs and Greeks seeking wisdom are stated preferences, and culpable ones. The cross affronts both. That is a moral category, not a metaphysical one 2:14 is the load-bearing verse, and it won’t carry the weight. Three things. First, dechetai means welcome or receive favorably, not perceive. The natural man does not embrace it, because he deems it folly. That is verse 18 and verse 23 restated, a verdict of valuation. Second, anakrinō is a courtroom word for appraising. He cannot rightly appraise spiritual things by his own resources, which we affirm. Nobody comes apart from the Father’s drawing and the Spirit’s conviction. The dispute is never over whether enabling is necessary, only over whether it is irresistible and restricted to a pre-selected few. Paul does not say that here. Third, and decisively, 14:24-25: an unbeliever walks in, is convicted, and is judged by all. Same verb, anakrinetai. The secrets of his heart are exposed and he falls down and worships. Paul uses the identical word for what happens to an unbeliever under Spirit-empowered proclamation. That is the natural man’s inability being answered by the very means Paul described in 2:4-5, so that “your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” And the chapter break confirms it. In 3:1 Paul calls the Corinthians carnal and says they walk as mere men. If 2:14 proved unregenerate incapacity, chapter 3 would prove the Corinthians unsaved. The contrast in context is maturity, not regeneration.

Not apart from God’s grace. As St. Thomas teaches, grace does not destroy nature but perfects it. Fallen human nature cannot attain supernatural righteousness by its own power, but grace heals and elevates the will, enabling man freely to cooperate with God, obey His commandments, and persevere in the obedience of faith.

**Corporate election in brief** God elects a sphere, not a roster. The choosing has a location, and the location is the point: chosen *in Him* before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Christ is the Elect One (Isaiah 42:1, quoted of Jesus in Matthew 12:18; Luke 9:35, "This is My Son, My Chosen One"; 1 Peter 2:4-6, the chosen cornerstone). Every other election is derivative of His. Three groups carry the term, and all three hold it in Him. **1. The elect angels.** First Timothy 5:21, "the elect angels," a settled category set against those who did not keep their first estate (Jude 6, 2 Peter 2:4). Colossians 1:16 says all things in heaven were created *through Him and for Him*, and 1:20 puts the reconciling of things in heaven under His blood. Their standing is in Christ as Head, and Scripture nowhere hints at a decree that forced the difference. Angels who kept their place did so; angels who abandoned it are reserved for judgment. Same Creator, same Head, different response. **2. Israel, chosen as a nation.** Deuteronomy 7:6-7, chosen as a people for Himself, expressly not for size or merit. Isaiah 45:4, "Israel My elect." The election is national and irrevocable (Romans 11:28-29), and it is in Christ, since Isaiah 49:3 names the Servant "Israel" and He is the true Seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16). Yet the wilderness generation fell through unbelief, and Rahab and Ruth entered from outside. Corporate standing never guaranteed individual participation. **3. The Church, chosen in Christ.** Elect because it is His body, sharing the status of its Head. First Peter 2:9 hands Israel's exact titles to the Church, a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Ephesians 1:4-13 gives the sequence plainly: chosen in Him, then "you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also, having believed, you were sealed." **How this answers the two questions** On the atonement: if election defines a sphere, provision made for all is not waste. It is what makes the door genuinely open. First Timothy 4:10 keeps both halves, Savior of all men, especially of believers. Universal provision, particular application. Second Peter 2:1 has false teachers denying the Master who bought them, which only parses if the purchase reached beyond the finally saved. On John 8:44: Jesus grounds devil-paternity in their willing, "the desires of your father you want to do," and three verses later He is still asking why they do not believe. Present allegiance, not a sealed class. Paul crossed from one paternity to the other on the Damascus road, and Nicodemus crossed by night. **The pattern that confirms it** Romans 11 runs entirely on corporate logic. Branches broken off for unbelief, others grafted in by faith, with a warning that the grafted can be removed the same way. The olive tree stays elect throughout. Membership is what moves. That is why Romans 9 ends on stumbling over the stone and Romans 10 on confessing with the mouth: God's freedom is exercised in defining the sphere as whoever believes rather than whoever descends from Abraham. Grace stays entirely God's. He designed the sphere, provided the Elect One, draws, convicts, and does the placing (1 Corinthians 12:13). Faith merits nothing. It is the empty hand receiving, which is exactly why Paul can use it as the thing that excludes boasting (Romans 3:27, 4:16).
