One of the patients that The Sameer Project had supported continuously was little Saadallah who sadly passed away last December from malnourishment. Eight months later, and in more dire times, his only brother is also malnourished. Help us support malnutrition cases: This mother had the pain of losing her... baby, and now the stress and fear of seeing her older son suffer from the lack of food. The Sameer Project visited the now family of 3 to provide nutritional support. We gave a vegetable parcel for $114 including 10% bank transfer fees, tuna for $15 per can after 45% cash commission, and red and green nutritional suppliants ranging from $2.5-$12 each. This is also true for older teens and young adults who have disabilities and cannot chew or digest food. The Sameer Project recently visited brothers Mahmoud and Mohammad for the second time to bring them life saving nutrients. This powdered formula is usually used as a transitional meal for babies who have been reliant on breast milk but before they can digest puréed food. Like other kids he waits in line for hours to bring drinking water back home, unlike other kids he does this by crawling through the dirt on his knees due to a deformity of his legs that he was born with. We asked Wissam’s father how we can help, and it turns out that he does not get much support. We cannot go back to this - burned and maimed babies, child martyrs, families torn apart. Prior to the ceasefire agreement, in one of the last mass casualty attacks (before today) our medical point in our Sawarha Camp received baby Rosa who had severe facial and upper torso burns from a fire that broke out after an airstrike. Her grandfather, who is one of her primary caretakers was also injured. Since then, the Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project medical team has been following up with Rosa for daily wound cleanings and burn debridement. We provided her with medication and burn cream and we are following up with scar cream as well. Thanks to the detailed personal care, weeks later Rosa is healing well and will make a full recovery. The pain, the indignity imposed, the lengths that individuals have to go to in order to provide for their families. This man had to crawl daily on two broken legs, set with titanium plates and external fixators, just to find a way to provide for his family. We have shared the struggles of Ibrahim who is living with pemphigus vulgaris, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes painful blisters and open sores across his skin. Every movement is a battle with pain. In Gaza, the treatment he needs is extremely limited. If Ibrahim is not hospitalized, he cannot receive the medication that keeps his condition from flaring up out of control. Musab is one of the most critical, and most devastating patients we have cared for under The Sameer Project. Months ago we would visit Musab nearly weekly with food parcels, nutritional help, and hygiene support, along with his medication, when he was at Al Shifa Hospital in the North. Upon evacuating to the South and being denied inpatient hospital services at Al Aqsa due to overcrowding, The Sameer Project has been in regular contact with the family to figure out how best to serve Musab. We immediately supplied him with a tent and a large food parcel with weeks worth of pantry staples. We also gave the injured child diapers and a restock of his medication. We want to do more, but in Gaza there are endless obstacles. The plan was to bring Musab and his family to one of our medical camps, with an onsite medical clinic ready to deal with any emergency. But Musab requires 24 hour electricity to run his air mattress, blender for food, and suction machine to remove secretion out of his airways. The Refaat Alareer Camp, Sawarha Camp, and Batool Camp like most of Gaza relies on solar panels for electricity. As the days become shorter and cloudier, electricity is not reliable. We are in discussion with Musab’s mother and father and ready to receive Musab when his family sees fit given the uncertain conditions. It just shows you the amount of effort and considerations that go into every decision of bringing every family into our medical camps.
