For investors who started investing after the pandemic, this is the first real market correction. Markets are cyclical, and given the way our markets went up from late 2020, this fall was inevitable. I don't know how good the data is, but it seems like the number of investors stopping their SIPs has gone up. This is the wrong thing to do. What an SIP helps you do is to average your investments across different market cycles. You averaged on your way up from 2021; now, you get to average on the way down. In 2020, large, mid, and small caps fell by 25-40% but then rose by 200-400%. If you had panicked, you would have missed the rebound. As long as you invest regularly in the right funds, diversify, and stay disciplined, your chances of long-term success are high. The other mistake to avoid is leverage. There's no shortage of businesses triggering you to borrow money to invest etc., but that's a bad idea. I've no idea where the markets go from here, and neither does anyone. What I do know is panicking now is the wrong thing to do, and you can get pushed to panic if you have borrowed. You are better off just investing every month and doing something useful in life than getting carried away by the doom and gloom. Professional trader Tom Hougaard on the single biggest psychological mistake that ruins most traders: He explains that the hardest part of trading isn't technical, it's psychological. It requires you to think in a way that directly contradicts how you operate in everyday life. In real life, we are trained to hunt for bargains. We compare prices at the supermarket and naturally gravitate towards whatever is cheaper. But Hougaard warns that applying this same instinct to markets is exactly what destroys most traders. TraderTom puts it simply: "You cannot be afraid of buying something that has already moved up significantly or you shouldn't be afraid of selling something that has already moved down significantly. And that's where the vast majority of people go wrong." The problem, according to Hougaard, is that markets don't operate the way shoppers think: "But the market doesn't operate with these principles of cheap or expensive. The market just has the prevailing price." He explains why this is so difficult for people to internalise: "Psychologically it's very difficult for us to accept because we are so brainwashed that we go to the supermarket and we see Pepsi Cola costs X but Coca-Cola is half price to Pepsi. So we all gravitate towards Coca-Cola because it's cheaper. But cheap in the market is a market that is going down. We don't want to buy that. We want to sell it short." Hougaard sums up the core challenge of trading: "The whole balance of being one person in real life and being another person in the market, that's what makes trading so incredibly difficult."

But, a truly disciplined person knows that the real test of discipline is sticking to it when everything goes to hell. Your most important workout will be the one you improvise at home when the gym was unexpectedly closed; Your most important practice session will be the one you put in when you're stressed and exhausted because everything went wrong at work; Your most important day of working on your business will be the one when you show up in spite of just having had your heart broken. "But you have to be flexible!" Deciding you'll go to the gym later than usual because you had to work overtime is being flexible. Deciding you'll skip the gym altogether because you're "too tired" is not flexibility — it's laziness. Disciplined people understand that discipline is non-negotiable. They understand the value of time, of consistency, of momentum, and that it's far easier to just keep the ball rolling rather than letting it stop and then having to get it rolling again, over and over. Disciplined people DON'T BREAK THE CHAIN.
