I f*cking love grid systems in print and product design, but for web and apps they are highly overrated. Mastery over flex (aka auto layout), spacing, and geometry (e.g. golden ratio and composition) is the way.

For apps a flexible grid relying just on margins is the best - yeah. For more complex web projects though it really helps to have the columns.
