Friends, for this Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time, we are treated to the wonderful and deeply challenging parable of the Pharisee and the publican from Luke 18. We are meant to see in this deceptively simple story a basic and clarifying principle in the spiritual order—namely, that the ego is meant to revolve around God, not God around the ego. And this might not be immediately clear: Sometimes the people that look the most religious actually aren’t very religious, and the people that look a million miles from God are actually in the right spiritual space.

I watched this conversation between Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah twice. An Israeli whose parents were murdered on October 7 and a Palestinian peace activist, sitting together, refusing to hate each other. It should be the most viral clip on the internet. Then I opened the comments. Thousands of people, most of them nowhere near the region, telling a Palestinian man he's wrong about his own home. Telling a bereaved Israeli his grief is propaganda. The two people with the most reason to hate chose not to, and the response from the safest corners of the internet was to inform them they're doing it wrong. I understand the anger behind some of it. Real people are grieving, and the war is not an abstraction. But when peace itself becomes the thing you attack, the problem is no longer the conflict. It's you.
