I see many of you are rejoicing. If you are asked to buy YouTube premium for $13 per month, can you be able to do that? Take USA, for example. Premium subscription is $13.99/month, while Nigerians pay N1,300/month. But you want to earn what someone in the USA is earning from Nigeria. Below is what advertisers pay to YouTube in USA vs. Nigeria. Recall that money from YouTube is called "Ad Sharing Revenue" I don't want to do Meta comparison. YouTube is enough 😄😄😄

How much content creators are paid is not dependent on if social media platforms can pay Nigerian creators but the GDP of the nation A creator in Nigeria can't earn the same money as a creator in Sweden for obvious reasons The ads being run on those platforms have fewer customers in Naija due to lower purchasing power of Nigerians when compared to their foreign counterparts But again..., her suggestion is a welcome developed

This is not dependent on the Nigerian laws. It is based on the standing of the country against other countries across the world. If we improve our economy to global standard, we will be paid much better

“She didn’t lie. Nigerian creators have the skill, the work ethic, the numbers, the ONLY thing missing is a functional payment structure. Kudos to Senator Natasha for speaking boldly where others stay silent.👌👏

Respectfully, this isn’t about regulation. Nigeria’s purchasing power is low, and no brand will pay $20–$100 CPC to target an audience they know can’t afford it. Until we’re willing to pay more for ads and subscriptions, creators here won’t earn like those in the US.

I disagree with her on this. Nigerians' purchasing power is no match for the US's, so there's no way earnings can be the same. In fact, if you have more Nigerians viewing your content, it reduces your income unlike when you have people from the West viewing your content.

So give Senator Natasha her flowers, she’s championing the modernization Nigeria has been postponing since 2015. Fix cross border payments and you’ll see Nigerian creators earning like their US counterparts in no time.

Senator, make we break am down well. How much content creators dey earn no be about “regularize online payment.” E dey tied to macroeconomic reality. Advertisers dey pay based on purchasing power of the audience. CPM for US fit be 15–25 dollars because one American fit buy product wey advertiser dey push. Nigeria own dey 0.2–1 dollar because majority no get that spending power. No platform go pay Nigerian creator US rates when advertisers no dey pay US rates for Nigerian eyeballs. Even if government “regularize” everything, dem no fit legislate GDP. Dem no fit mandate Meta or Google to pay US ad price for Nigerian traffic. Na economics, not sentiment. The day Nigerians get higher disposable income and local businesses fit pay premium for ads, na that day creator revenue go rise. So yes, support creators, fix payment bottlenecks, reduce FX wahala. But earning like US creators no dey happen until our economy match the spending power wey dey drive those platforms. That one no be Senate amendment fit change. It’s pure market reality.

The major reason why Nigerians do not earn as much as other content creators in other countries is because of advertising proceeds. How many Nigerian companies Dey advertise on Facebook?

It’s clear she doesn’t really understand how this works outside monetizing her Facebook. She should start by targeting ads to Nigeria or Ghana, then scale to the UK or US. Nobody gifts money. The earnings come from ad revenue, and it depends on purchasing power.

Perhaps the conversation should shift from simple regularization to fostering a domestic digital economy robust enough to value and compensate our own talent. The US comparison often sidesteps the core issue: are Nigerians willing to pay US prices for Nigerian content?

Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan’s statement cuts to a structural challenge in Nigeria’s digital economy. While Nigerian content creators are producing globally competitive work, inconsistent or restricted online payment systems limit their ability to monetize fully. Without reliable cross-border payment channels, creators face financial friction that stifles growth, reduces incentive, and hampers the country’s creative export potential. Regularizing online payments isn’t just a technical fix, it’s an economic imperative. It levels the playing field, allowing Nigerian creators to earn comparably to peers in the U.S., attract investment, and scale businesses internationally. Beyond individual gains, this reform could catalyze a broader digital economy, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and global cultural influence for Nigeria.

Senator Natasha Akpoti’s call for regularizing online payment isn’t just about fairness, it’s about unlocking the full potential of Nigerian creativity. With better infrastructure and payment channels, Nigerian creators wouldn’t just compete for views; they'd earn real value for their time and talent.

A senator has access to at least 5 govt paid assistants/consultants to help her research and advise on matters like this, but no. Hunch! Regulation is not what will increase earnings. The environment commands the value allotment. Those businesses pay from advertisers and conversion probability of content to earn money from adverts. 1. Our purchasing power is low 2. Our advert rates are relatively low 3. Our conversion rates are relatively low We are a big market already. Talk of enabling us to sell instead

That's not possible... Proof that politicians are dumb! Nigerians pay about 5% of what the US pays in YouTube premium and you expect creators to be given money they've not earned?? The money advertisers for marketing agencies in Nigeria pay would barely pay a single US creator!
