VIDEO | Reacting to Odisha's draft electoral roll released under the SIR, Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das says, "We have no objection to removing the names of deceased voters, but cases where living people have been mistakenly declared dead should be verified. Our main concern is the 12 lakh names removed from the rolls. Many of them are migrant workers who are unable to return because they are stuck in other states and have lost contact with their families. These cases should be verified. What LoP Rahul Gandhi Ji has said about Election Commission of India is absolutely correct. We recently saw a BLO in Rajasthan threatening to take his life outside the DM office because he was being pressured by a BJP MLA to delete the names of 470 Muslim voters. In Kerala as well, the ECI deleted lakhs of voters without disclosing their names. The UDF had to approach the Supreme Court, and only after the Court’s intervention did the Election Commission agree to reveal the deleted names. Today, the ECI and the ED are acting like two arms of the BJP. In the BMC elections, the Congress party chose to fight alone. Our performance is not good, but we are rebuilding and strengthening our organisation for the future.

About 11.1 million voters will receive notices and will be required to submit documents to retain their voter status. The deadline to fill the SIR form is midnight today. While the draft voter list will be published on December 31, the final list is expected in February. Despite an extended 15-day window, only about 1 million voters submitted forms, leaving 29.1 million forms unsubmitted as of December 11.

Purification of voter list is not a new phenomenon, it has been going on since Cong times when TN Sheshan was CEC. In Assam, 2 lakh people are marked as D voters, who are not allowed to vote; in the SIR too both Hindus and Muslims have their names held up. News18

The Election Commission must ensure that the names which were deleted are reinstated; just as they were removed, they should be added back. I will provide all the details—such as those BLOs who are not visiting home to home and which BLOs do not answer their phones... Among the 12 prescribed documents, some are simply not available in Telangana... We suggested to the Election Commission that PAN cards should be included in the list because a person can vote on the basis of a PAN card. Similarly, the state government issues driving licences and food security cards, which are also accepted for voting purposes. However, the Election Commission did not accept our suggestion..."
