The Discovery Space Shuttle is a historical artifact. We shouldn’t chop it up. The Trump administration is directing NASA to transfer the space shuttle Discovery to Space Center Houston, a move that NASA and Smithsonian estimate will cost taxpayers at least $120-$150 million. Of the 22,000 tiles that make up the shuttle’s iconic thermal protection system, as many as 12,000 would have to be removed for disassembly. Once those tiles are removed, there is only a 10% chance of saving each one, since they’re made up of roughly 97% air and 3% silica.

A Soyuz rocket took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday, carrying a NASA astronaut and 2 Russian cosmonauts. The mission reached orbit safely, but the launchpad did not. Part of the structure collapsed during liftoff, forcing Russia to halt all future crewed launches from the site until repairs can be made. That’s a big deal - it’s their only launchpad for sending humans to space. Roscosmos says it has the parts and will make repairs "in the near future," but independent analysts aren’t so sure. Critical infrastructure was reportedly destroyed. This marks the first time since 1961 that Russia has no working launchpad for human spaceflight - a serious blow to its space ambitions, especially as it plans to build its own space station by 2030. A Ukrainian historian explains to a Russian that Ukrainians and Russians are not one people with a simple question: how was the Russian ethnic group formed? :) Because all the tribes from which Ukrainians originated — and which Russians have falsely claimed as their own — lived only on the territory of Ukraine, not Russia. Russians, on the other hand, began forming from the remnants of the Mongols after their empire collapsed, and they have absolutely no connection to Kyivan Rus.

The first advance convoy for the Russian president has arrived in Beijing… Putin will arrive in the evening of May 19. He will be received at the aircraft stairs by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to Yuri Ushakov. As usual, there will be a red carpet, an honor guard, and young pioneers.
