Careless = foul, no card (lack of attention/precaution). Reckless = yellow card (disregard for danger to the opponent). Serious foul play/excessive force = red card (endangering the opponent's safety with disproportionate force).

I am a lifelong Messi fan and I felt that he should have gotten a yellow for that challenge, which he obviously didn’t. Definitely not a red card offense IMO (I didn’t think it met the ‘excessive force’ criteria per FIFA rule for a red card).

I don't get it. Every one of those should have been a Yellow Card! Everyone! Minimum. Including Messi's. It should not get excused because the refs have failed at their jobs.

All this other tackles were reviewed and at the very least yellow card was issued. In the examples shown all had the ball in positions not won with only intent for the ball. With Messi reckless tackle the ball was nowhere to be won, had already fouled him from behind.
