He didn’t pull it off, and that’s the joke. The film is making fun of method actors, not black people. His speech about, “Never go full retard,” is him being a clueless hypocrite. It’s done ironically. Even the actual black person in the cast calls him out, multiple times.

C. Thomas Howell came close.

I just realized that he protested crossing the river because his black face make up would of rubbed off and that would of ended his character.

No because I genuinely have never laughed so hard at a movie before until this whole scene

Robert Downey Jr. deserved an Oscar for this performance. It's fantastic.

Because this is not blackface as traditionally done. With blackface the butt of the joke is black people. In Tropic Thunder RDJ’s character the actor who is white doing this is the joke. And a black character calls him out.

Would a sequel be the most watched movie of the year, excluding major blockbusters?

Robert Downey Jr played an Australian dude who dressed up as a black dude, and said it in his movie line! ... and it was fucking hilarious!

Cause the overall joke wasn’t black ppl, the joke was actors being stupid enough to think imitating another race is high art.

I never knew it was RDJ the first two times watching this masterpiece (I was extremely high). I genuinely thought it was some random black actor I didn't know until RDJ went to the Rogan podcast to talk about the experience of this movie. A fuckin black legend man.

@KJOURNEY820306 It was genius because we were in on the joke. That wasn't black face for the sake of ridiculing black folks. Among other layers, it was making fun of cultural appropriation and the absurdity of cultural arrogance in entertainment.

Nah that line alone was worth the whole thing….he knew who he was lol it wasn’t negative black face so much as it was intense method acting….dude was locked in as a black man from the 70’s

I remember entering the theatre a bit late and wondering why this black guy looked so wierd. I learned like 5years later after rewatching from the top that the guy was white 😂
